The night Shah Rukh Khan and Wankhede security went head-to-head!
Over the years, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has delivered high-voltage matches, jaw-dropping performances, and, of course, off-field controversies. However, one of the most talked-about incidents had nothing to do with bat and ball—it involved Bollywood superstar and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) owner Shah Rukh Khan.
Yes, the “King of Bollywood” was banned from Wankhede Stadium in 2012 after a heated altercation with security officials. But what really happened that night? Let’s delve into the details.
It was May 16, 2012, and KKR had just defeated the Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium. The KKR camp was ecstatic, but the celebrations soon took a sour turn. Shah Rukh Khan, along with his kids and a few close friends, walked onto the field after the match.
That’s when things took an unexpected turn. Security personnel stopped them, leading to an argument that escalated within minutes. SRK was seen furiously pointing fingers and confronting the guards while MCA (Mumbai Cricket Association) officials intervened.
The very next day, the MCA imposed a five-year ban on SRK, prohibiting him from entering Wankhede. The officials accused him of misbehaviour and intoxication—claims that SRK firmly denied.
The ban sparked widespread debate, with fans split over its justification. However, in 2015, three years after the incident, the MCA quietly lifted the restriction.
While the MCA had their version, SRK later explained what triggered his reaction. According to him, he lost his temper because he believed his children were being mistreated.
He claimed that one of the security officials used an offensive term, which deeply angered him. This, he said, resulted in a heated exchange.
Despite the controversy, KKR’s performance remained unaffected. In fact, just a few days later, they secured their first-ever IPL title in 2012, marking a season to remember for all the right—and wrong—reasons.
