The initiative creates awareness among people to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic waste
In a world where nothing is free and everything has to be purchased with money, Indonesia said, “No, we don’t do that here.” At least, when it comes to public bus transport, one can travel without paying money for a ticket. Instead, one can pay with plastic and get a ride.
In 2018, the Indonesian city of Surabaya started the SB rapid transit system.
While money is accepted in return for tickets, the authorities also accept plastic as a currency.
One can give plastics and ride free for two hours in the Suroboyo buses.
The move was made to encourage people to use public transport more often and reduce the use of plastic to promote a greener and more sustainable environment.
By doing so, the Indonesian city is trying to fulfil Goals 9 and 11 of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
