The staggering investment that turned Mumbai Indians into an IPL powerhouse
When the Indian Premier League (IPL) commenced in 2008, cricket entered a new era of franchise-based competitions. With the world watching, some of the greatest names in business and Bollywood engaged in a bidding war for teams. Mukesh Ambani, one of India’s richest men, placed the highest offer of $111.9 million (roughly ₹853 crore at the time) for the Mumbai franchise.

This was the most expensive acquisition among the eight original teams, surpassing Hyderabad’s $107 million bid and Bangalore’s $106 million price tag. It was a risky decision but one that transformed the history of the IPL, establishing the Mumbai Indians as the league’s most successful side over time.
Through its sports subsidiary IndiaWin Sports, Reliance Industries recognised the IPL’s potential early on. While others considered it a cricket experiment, Mukesh Ambani considered it a long-term commercial venture. Mumbai was India’s commercial powerhouse, boasting some of cricket’s greatest stars and a vast fan base.

At the time, an investment of $111.9 million seemed risky, but Ambani’s goal was clear: to create a global sports brand. Over time, the Mumbai Indians evolved into a formidable force in the IPL and a billion-dollar brand, demonstrating that the investment was indeed well worth it.
Fast-forward to 2025, and the Mumbai Indians are no longer merely a cricket team but a global sports enterprise. The club has won five IPL titles, making it the league’s most successful team alongside the Chennai Super Kings.
According to Brand Finance’s 2020 report, the Mumbai Indians became the first IPL team to surpass $100 million in brand value. MI’s brand worth rose by 7.1% to $70.3 million (₹536 crore) in 2020, even as other brands suffered losses due to Covid-19.

By 2023, the Mumbai Indians’ brand worth had exceeded $110 million (₹850 crore), nearly matching their initial acquisition price. The franchise is currently valued at over ₹10,000 crore, rendering Ambani’s initial investment one of the most profitable ventures in IPL history.
The success of the Mumbai Indians was not solely about winning trophies. Ambani’s team developed a business empire centred on cricket, with strategic partnerships, sponsorships, and international expansion.
