Motorcycle 101: Highway Riding Tips in Peak Indian Summers

If you are planning to hit the highway soon but if you have never ridden in the peak Indian summer conditions before, go through this article before hitting the highway

The peak Indian summers are here and in certain parts of India, the temperature rises to 50 degrees Celsius or 122 degrees Fahrenheit. In such wretched conditions, it is extremely tough to cover thousands of kilometres. Not to forget, a vast majority of the Indian highways feature potholes equivalent to the size of craters found on the moon, which only makes the ride tougher.

In the following paragraphs, we have shared some tips to ride under the peak Indian summers for rookie riders and those who have never faced such conditions before.

Purchase a cooling vest

As we are well aware, on highway rides, it is important to wear riding jackets and trousers to avoid horrible injuries in case of an accident. The mentioned riding apparels are usually heavy, thick and also lack proper ventilation. In short, at 40 or 50 degrees Celsius under those apparel, the riding condition turns into an incorrigible phenomenon.

To deal with the heat, purchase a cooling vest. A cooling vest is a vest that functions like a flask. The vest comprises waterproof pockets that can be filled with cold/chilled water or even smashed ice in a powdered form. The vest maintains the cold temperature of the ice/water for over 24 hours and keeps the rider cool.

Hydration pack

Apart from a cooling vest, one needs to purchase a hydration pack as well. A hydration pack is a bag that can be filled with cold/hot water. Usually, the riding hydration pack features a long straw that is placed near the rider’s mouth. The rider can consume as much water as he or she wants without making a halt. Riding packs are available in five, 10 or 15-litre capacities.

Electrolyte drinks

Throughout the ride, one must take care of his or her hydration. Therefore, apart from consuming plenty of water; one must consume electrolyte-based drinks. There are several medicinal electrolyte-based drinks available on the market. However, we advise natural electrolyte-based drinks such as watermelon juice or coconut water.

Make stops at regular intervals

For experienced riders, covering 200 or 300 kilometres under such conditions is not a major issue. However, rookie riders should never push themselves in such conditions. It is our advice that riders must rejuvenate themselves after regular intervals of around 70 or 80 kilometres.
