Lok Sabha 2024: Congress Decides to Observe While Modi Govt Pushes for UCC

The Congress reiterated its position on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on Saturday, stating that it is undesired and will speak again if a draught bill or report on the subject is brought forward.
According to Congress, the grand old party will adhere to the Law Commission's and the Union Law Ministry's opinions as the current Law Commission (22nd) still needs to submit its report on Personal Laws (Uniform Civil Code).
Strategic meeting of Congress
The top leaders of the party gathered for their parliamentary strategy group meeting, where they reviewed several topics that would be brought up during the Monsoon session of Parliament, which would start on July 20."When there's a draft and a discussion, we will participate and examine what is proposed. As of now, all we have is law commission public notice for responses. The Congress reiterates the statement as nothing new has happened," Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, as NDTV quoted.
The UCC refers to a single body of rules that govern marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and other private concerns without regard to religion and apply to all Indian citizens.
Modi's recent push
In a most recent vigorous drive for a Universal Civil Code, Prime Minister Narendra Modi questioned how the nation could operate with two sets of rules governing personal concerns. He also blamed the opponents for utilising the UCC issue to "mislead and provoke" the Muslim community.Only the 21st Law Commission's discussion paper on "Reform of Family Law," which says "formulation of a Uniform Civil Code is neither necessary nor desirable at this stage," has been given to members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Law and Justice, who will meet on July 3 to discuss the review of personal laws.
