In case you have a vehicle that is 15-year-old or more, it is time for you to get it scrapped, but how to do it?
A few months ago, the government of India introduced a new vehicle scrappage policy according to which a person should not use a vehicle that is above 15 years of age. For those living in the National Capital Region, it is mandatory to scrap the old vehicles. However, in several states, the policy is not mandatory because those states have allowed the old vehicles to run after they undergo a series of fitness tests. If those vehicles pass the tests, they will receive a no-objection certificate for five additional years.
Back to the old vehicles in the National Capital Region, most of the owners do not know how to scrap their old vehicles. After all, before the policy, rarely anyone ever thought of scrapping their vehicles. Therefore, we have composed this article to help those owners who must scrap their vehicles as soon as possible. To begin with, let us inform you that India never really had renowned companies in the vehicle scrapping business. It is a business that unorganised small-scale companies have always handled. However, because of the new policy, that has changed.
In 2021, several manufacturers have ventured into the business of vehicle scrapping. For example, Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki have their vehicle scrapping plants in Noida, Uttar Pradesh and the two companies are working hard to introduce more scrapping plants in various Indian cities. Not to forget, several government Authorised Vehicle Scrapping Facility (AVSF) are found in different cities that abide by the rules and guidelines laid down by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to scrap vehicles. Moving on to the scrapping of vehicles, here are the steps one must follow.
Contact the centre
One needs to contact the centre and make an appointment. He or she can drive the vehicle to the centre or if the vehicle is not in a drivable condition, it is picked up by the centre.
Handover papers
All the original papers of the vehicle are to be handed over (with no legal issues such as traffic challan or unsettled loan amount). A government authorised Form-2 must be submitted as well. Once checked and cleared, the vehicle will be scrapped.
Collect certificate of destruction
Once done, the centre will give a certificate of destruction that must be submitted to de-register the vehicle at the RTO. Last but not the least, 4-6 per cent of the vehicle’s original price will be awarded to the owner.
