Human history has several mysteries that despite herculean efforts made by scholars, scientists, historians,and cryptographers, remain unsolved forever. Here are some of the world’s greatest unsolved mysteries.
Voynich Manuscript
This comprehensive 240-page book written in a language or script that is entirely unknown is considered ‘the world’s most mysterious manuscript’. Named after the Polish-American antiquarian bookseller Wilfrid M. Voynich who got it in 1912, the original author of the book remains unknown. Probably written in the 15th century, the book has colorful illustrations of inexplicable diagrams, odd events, and plants that do not seem to match any known species explaining the strangeness of the book and why it can never be deciphered.
Bermuda Triangle
Also known as Devil’s Triangle, thearea is bounded by the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda; Florida, Miami, United States; and Puerto Rico. The unexplained disappearance of several ships and planes in this area makes it one of the biggest mysteries of modern times. Although there has not been any reasonable explanation, several theories suggest some magnetic force and methane eruptions from the ocean floor as probable reasons.
Lost city of Atlantis
The legend of the Lost City of Atlantis suggests that the island of Atlantis was once inhabited by simple and righteous people. But as the people started becoming greedy and corrupted, the Greek God Zeus got angry and inundated the whole city with its entire population in the sea. Although nothing has been proven to date, this city’s existence has been corroborated by Plato’s writing.
Phaistos Disc
Phaistos Disc is believed to be designed in the second millennium B.C. and is considered as the most famous puzzle of archaeology. This disc was found by Italian archaeologist Luigi Pernier in the early 1900s in the Minoan palace site of Phaistos. The disc is made of fired clay and has mysterious symbols that may represent an unknown form of hieroglyphics, resembling symbols of Linear A and Linear B, an ancient Crete script.
Yeti
You must have come across tales of the ‘abominable snowman'roaming in the mountains but till date, there is no tangible evidence acknowledging its presence. Yeti is one of the biggest unsolved mysteries in the worldwith many claiming it to be an ancient relative of humans who was able to thrive in the wilderness.
Shugborough inscription
Great minds like Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens have tried to unearth the mystery behind this 18th-century Shepherd's Monument in Staffordshire, England but have failed. When you look closer, there is an enigmatic pattern of letters –DOUOSVAVVM which still remains a puzzle even after more than 250 years.
