Situated in Pune district, Shivneri Fort is the known as Shivaji Maharaj’s birthplace. The great leader was born in 1630. Nestled in the Sahyadri hills, Shivneri fort played a vital role in shaping his early years. Tourists can explore the robust walls of the fort, water reservoirs, along with the temple dedicated to Goddess Shivai. As per historians, Shivaji’s name was inspired by Goddess Shivai. The fort’s strategic position offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, making it a must-visit place for history lovers.

Shivaji Maharaj was crowned Chhatrapati in 1674 in this fort which served as the capital of the Maratha Empire. The massive gates, the iconic Maha Darwaza, and the grand Raj Bhavan (King’s Palace) showcase the past glory of Maratha Empire. The Samadhi or memorial of Shivaji Maharaj within the fort is a place of reverence, attracting thousands of devotees along with history lovers every year.
Pratapgad Fort, situated near Mahabaleshwar, is famous for the historic battle between Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan back in 1659. According to historical evidences, this battle showcased Shivaji’s excellent warfare tactics that established his supremacy. The fort also houses a beautiful temple dedicated to Goddess Bhavani, whom Shivaji considered his guardian deity. The statue of Shivaji Maharaj is now installed at Pratapgad fort as a tribute to his valor.

Also known as Prachandgad, Torna Fort holds historical significance as the first fort captured by Shivaji Maharaj when he was only 16 years old. This event marked the beginning of the expansion of famous Maratha Empire. Lal Mahal, located in Pune, was built by Shivaji’s father, Shahaji Raje. He also played a vital role in Shivaji’s formative years. Though the original structure was destroyed in battle, the reconstructed Lal Mahal serves as a museum displaying paintings and artifacts related to Shivaji’s life. This place is famous for another reason, here Shivaji attacked Shaista Khan, demonstrating his courage and strategic brilliance.
