Ratan Tata, who ran Tata Sons for over 20 years as chairman, passed away at a Mumbai hospital.
"It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation," said N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons, in a late night statement.
The global conglomerate Tata Group has 30 companies in 10 different sectors including IT, steel, auto, infrastructure, retail, telecom, and so on. After the demise of Shri Ratan Tata, questions are rising about his successors to handle such a huge empire of Rs. 3800 Cr. N Chandrasekaran became the chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company, in 2017 after retirement of Ratan Tata. While Tata may not have own children, but the lineage is vast and younger generations are progressively preparing for leadership roles. Among others, 67-year old Noel Tata is currently the front-runner, who is the son of Naval Tata from his second marriage with Simone Dunoyer. He is the half-brother of Ratan Tata which makes Noel Tata as a notable figure in the inheritance of Tata’s legacy. Noel Tata has three children, who equally stand out as formidable candidates.
Noel has been associated with the Tata group for last 40 years. He is currently serving as the Board of various Tata Group Companies, such as the Chairman of Trent, Tata International Limited, Voltas & Tata Investment Corporation. Leah Tata, 39, is associated with the hospitality sector of the Tata Group. She is graduate of IE Business School in Spain. Due to her expertise, Leah contributed largely in improving the business of Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces. Currently, Leah handles operations at the Indian Hotel Company and working with an aim of expanding the Tata group’s presence in the hospitality sector globally.

Maya Tata, 34, has been contributing a lot in Tata’s progress in recent years. She has studied in Bayes Business School and the University of Warwick. Maya played crucial role at Tata Opportunities Fund and Tata Digital. India's first superapp, Tata Neu App was her brainchild which became extremely popular after 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL).
Neville Tata, 32, has participated in the family business since his younger days. Neville is married to Manasi Kirloskar, who also has the roots with the Toyota Kirloskar Group. Currently, Neville is successfully leading Star Bazaar, which is a famous hypermarket chain under Trent Limited. This highlights his potential as a future leader in family business.
Ratan Tata had previously endorsed the appointment of Leah, Maya, and Neville as trustees of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust.
