It was a happy time for the fans of Vijay Sethpathi when his latest film Maharaja released in the theatres. However, now after a successful theatrical run, Vijay Sethupathi's landmark 50th film is all set for its digital release, and will soon drop on OTT. The Tamil-language action thriller was 2024’s highest-grossing Tamil film, and raked in moolah at the box office. Helmed by Nithilan Swaminathan, who co-wrote the dialogues with Raam Murali, Maharaja witnessed the highest opening weekend for a Tamil film in 2024.
After having its Los Angeles premiere on 28 June after it was picked as one of the closing night selections at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles. When it was released in the cinema halls, it not only collected INR 4.7 crore on its opening day, but crossed the INR 80 crore mark at the box office worldwide within the first ten days of its release by minting a total sum of INR 81.8 crore. Maharaja was released worldwide on 14 June. Earlier, it was slated to release in May this year, but the makers pushed it due to unspecified reasons. Now finally, the film’s digital streaming rights have been acquired by Netflix and the satellite rights were acquired by Star Vijay. Maharaja is all set to premiere on Netflix on 12 July 2024.
While Vijay Sethupathi plays the role of Maharaja in the much-loved project, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap plays the part of Selvam. On the other hand, Sachana Namidass is seen as Jyothi, Mamta Mohandas as Aasifa, Natarajan Subramaniam as Inspector S, Varadharajan, Abhirami as Kokila, Divya Bharathi as Selvi, Maharaja’s wife, Singampuli as Nallasivam, Aruldoss as Sub-inspector R. K. Perumalsamy, Munishkanth as Constable Kuzhandhaivelu, Vinod Sagar as Sabari, Manikandan as Dhana, Kaalaiyan as Councillor Karunakaran. Not just that, the film also features Kalki, P. L. Thenappan, Saravana Subbiah, Vetrivel Raja, Bharathiraja, Mohan Raman, Poovaiyar, Lizzie Antony, Poster Nandakumar, Sangeetha V, Supergood Subramani, Mullai Arasi and Baby Shynika in key roles.
Vijay Sethupathi’s character Maharaja lives with his daughter, Jyothi in Chennai. However, Jyothi had survived a major childhood accident when she was shielded by a metal dustbin. The father-daughter named the dustbin “Lakshmi” and anthropomorphised it. One day, Maharaja tells the local police station that Lakshmi has been robbed. While the police initially refuse the case, they eventually decide to look into it after Maharaja promises them a bribe of INR 5 lakh. Determined, Maharaja goes on a relentless pursuit to reclaim his lost treasure.
The film crossed the INR 100 crore mark at the global box office.
