UCL 2024/25: How AC Milan Fared Against Madrid 14 Years Ago?

It's been 14 years since the two European giants have met each other in the UEFA Champions League

They finally meet again on November 6—one has 15 Champions League titles, whereas the other one holds seven Champions League trophies. The two teams in question are Real Madrid and AC Milan, two of the biggest football clubs on earth with over a century of history and no shortage of glory.

The last decade has seen Real Madrid expand its dominance over the Champions League, whereas AC Milan's last UCL glory was in 2007. Even the teams' previous clash against each other went in Real Madrid's favour, which took place 14 years ago.

Ahead of the November 6 clash, let us take a look at the results of the last two legs Real Madrid and AC Milan played against each other in 2010.

First leg – Real Madrid 2-0 AC Milan

On Tuesday, October 19, 2010, the first leg between Real Madrid and AC Milan was played at the iconic Santiago Bernabeu. The game was pretty much over for Milan in the first half as Cristiano Ronaldo broke the deadlock in the 13th minute.

Xabi Alonso had won a free-kick at the edge of Milan's area and allowed Ronaldo to take the free kick, which was easily converted into a goal, going past a poor wall formation. The night wasn't a memorable one for Milan's goalkeeper Marco Amelia, who made his debut in that game, replacing an injured Christian Abbiati.

The second goal by Mesut Ozil was further frustrating for Amelia, who was in the correct position to defend the shot. However, fate had other plans as the shot deflected off Milan's defender Daniele Bonera and dropped into an empty net—Amelia was left stunned and simply could not believe his luck.

The rest of the game also saw numerous attacks by Real Madrid, but a determined Amelia did not concede a third or more and saved an embarrassing defeat even though the game was lost, and so were the three points.

Second leg – AC Milan 2-2 Real Madrid

At the San Siro, it was a crucial game for Milan; a win meant a confirmed place in the R16, whereas a loss or draw meant their fate hanged on the performances of Ajax and Auxerre, who were also placed in the same group.

However, the night started off with a Higuan goal in the 45th minute that gave Real Madrid a lead. In the second half, though, AC Milan took charge, and Real Madrid suddenly felt the heat. In the 60th minute, Filippo Inzaghi was brought in for Ronaldinho, who scored an equalizer in the 68th minute, followed by another goal in the 78th minute. The two goals put AC Milan ahead, but on aggregate, the score stood 3-2.

The tussle went on for the next 12 minutes, but as always, Real Madrid finally found a goal in the dying 90+4 minutes, thanks to a goal by substitute winger Pedro León.

Despite the fightback, AC Milan lost the game but progressed to the R16, having collected eight points in the group stage and finishing second. Real Madrid, on the other hand, won five out of six games and drawn one, finishing at the top of the group with 16 points.

In the upcoming game, stakes are higher for AC Milan, who are presently placed 25th on the UCL table, whereas Real Madrid is in the 12th spot.
