On This Day (Mar. 27): SRH Slams 277 Runs, Setting the Highest IPL Score at the Time

In 2024, Hyderabad created a new record for the highest IPL score ever, but the record stayed intact for less than a month

In the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), until 2013, the highest target set by a team was 263 runs, scored by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. This record stayed intact for 11 years until 2024, when Sunrisers Hyderabad scored 277 runs against the Mumbai Indians. On March 27, 2024, in the eighth match of the season, Sunrisers Hyderabad achieved the impossible on their home soil by winning by 31 runs.

Three players with strike rates above 230

Batting first, Sunrisers Hyderabad lost an early wicket of Mayank Agarwal, but following the early loss, the team pressed the pedal to the metal and got the innings into the sixth gear.

Travis Head scored 62 runs in 24 balls at a strike rate of 258.33, while Abhishek Sharma also contributed to the team's success with 63 runs in 23 balls at a strike rate of 273.91. Aiden Mark also contributed 42 runs in 28 balls, and just when the Mumbai Indians thought that one batter’s strike rate fell below 200, Heinrich Klaasen showered his wrath. The South African added another 80 runs in 34 balls at a strike rate of 235.29 and helped Hyderabad score 277 runs on the board.

To be honest, Hyderabad received a bit of help from the Mumbai Indians as well because their bowlers gave away 19 runs as extras.

The Mumbai Indians did not win the game but came close, scoring 246 runs, thanks to quickfire contributions from Rohit Sharma, who made 26 runs in 12 balls, followed by Ishan Kishan’s 34 and Naman Dhir’s 30. Tilak Varma was the best chaser from the Mumbai outfit, making 64 runs in 34 balls, whereas 42 runs were scored by Tim David in 22 balls. However, despite decent strike rates, a long, fast-paced innings was required from one of the players, but none stayed on the crease, and Hyderabad won the game by 31 runs.

A record for less than a month

IPL’s batting standards have gone so high that the record Hyderabad created after a gap of 11 years stayed intact for less than a month. Three weeks later, in a match against Bengaluru on April 15, 2024, Hyderabad scored 287 runs, setting a new record for the highest total by a team in the IPL. In 2025, the team came close to beating their own record again but was stopped at 286 runs by the Rajasthan Royals.
