Trivia T20 WC: When This Bowler Conceded Six Sixes in Six Deliveries

No, the answer is not Stuart Broad

When it comes to conceding six sixes in six deliveries, people mostly recall the name of Stuart Broad, who was thrashed by Yuvraj Singh in the ICC T20 World Cup 2007. However, there is another bowler who conceded six sixes in six consecutive deliveries, but there is a twist.

While Stuart Broad conceded the six sixes in the six deliveries of a single over, the other player in question was thrashed in the last three balls of an over, followed by the first three balls of the next over he bowled—six sixes in six deliveries.

Confused? Let us simplify in the following paragraphs.

India vs. Australia, Group F

The year was 2010, and India clashed with Australia in the first game of Group F in Barbados on May 7. Australia batted in the first inning, and the bowler in question was chosen by the former Indian captain to bowl the fourth over.

In the last three balls of the fourth over, Shane Watson hit three consecutive sixes. The first two deliveries were short, but the in-form Watson had enough time to go on his back foot and pull through the deep mid-wicket. The third ball was also a short pitch, but Watson guided it over the boundary via the fine-leg.

The unfortunate bowler is Ravindra Jadeja, who was once again asked to bowl the 10th over. This time, David Warner was on the striker’s end, and the hard-hitting Aussie smashed three back-to-back sixes in the first three deliveries of the over. In fact, one of the sixes witnessed the ball going over the roof of the Barbados stadium.

And there it was—an unfortunate record for Sir Jadeja, conceding six sixes in six deliveries but not in an over, split in two sets of three.

A humiliating defeat

Moving on to the result of the match, David Warner’s 72 off 42 runs, Shane Watson’s 54, and David Hussey’s 35 runs helped Australia post a target of 184 runs. In response, the Indian batting lineup was left red-faced.

Only Rohit Sharma managed to score 79 runs off 46 balls, an innings that also included four boundaries and six sixes coupled with a strike rate of 171.33. Apart from Sharma, Harbhajan Singh was the only player who reached a score of double digit, i.e., 13 runs off 11 balls.

None of the other nine batsmen could score past ten runs; in fact, six batsmen were sent back to the pavilion with five runs or less. In short, it was a humiliating defeat for India as Dirk Nannes and Shaun Tait ran riot, picking three wickets each.

Australia performed equally well throughout the tournament and reached the finale. However, the Aussies fell short against England, and the Three Lions lifted their first-ever T20 World Cup in 2010, adding a second title in 2022.
