When it comes to movies, India has not had much luck in winning the Academy Awards
The Academy Awards, commonly known as the Oscars, are the most prestigious awards one can win in the world of global cinema. However, India, despite producing some of the finest movies, has not had much luck in grabbing one in the best film category.
Instead, over the years, several of India's official entries into the Oscars have been accused of being copied—the recent one being Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies, which has been accused of copying a film called Burqa City.
Which other films have been accused?
India's official entry in 2023, Chello Show, was accused of copying an Italian film called 'Cinema Paradiso'.
Rajkumar Rao's Newton was announced as India's official Oscar entry in 2021. The film was accused of copying an Iranian movie named 'Secret Ballot'.
Anurag Basu's Barfi, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ileana D'Cruz and Saurabh Shukla, was accused of copying the 1952 Gene Kelly film 'Singin' In The Rain'.
Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy was also accused of copying Eminem's Oscar-winning film 8 Mile. However, she defended it by stating that Gully Boy was inspired by the film, but the film was very specific to problems faced by Indian rappers at the grassroots level.
