Netflix's hit show Squid Game is all set to return with its second season this December.
Adding to the excitement of the fans, Netflix has now announced the Season 2 of Squid Game, and it will premiere on December 26, 2024. The show’s final season will be later released in 2025, before finally wrapping up. To say the least, the thriller-drama show was one of the biggest viral sensations of 2020 at a time when the world was grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The news of the show’s return was shared via a heartfelt letter written by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the executive producer, writer and director of Squid Games. Along with it, the makers released a teaser. As per the show’s official synopsis, “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport. Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.”

The upcoming season will also be helmed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, and the show will have Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo reprising their roles from Season 1.
However, before we watch the second season, let’s recall what makes the overall show overtly popular, be it because of the performances or the memes surrounding the show’s premise. Have a look:
Squid game actually doesn’t involve actual squid, but it’s actually a playground game which was played among children in South Korea during the 1970s and ’80s. In fact, the brutal series features six games based on a classic Korean children’s game, including Red Light, Green Light and tug-of-war.
While the pastel-hued game setups might suggest otherwise, the show is full of body horror, emotional cruelties and betrayals among the contestants, who fight for survival.
The thrilling game is loved by one and all but it is the performances that have made it a hit. Be it Lee Jung-jae’s performance as the protagonist, Gi-hun or Park Hae-soo as Gi-hun’s childhood friend, Sang-woo, all the actors have played their parts well. However, the breakout star of the show, remains former model Jung Ho-yeon, who is seen as the North Korean defector with an aim to win money and take her brother out of an orphanage.
It cannot be ruled out that the show explores themes of capitalism and class anxiety with contestants facing the game horrors out of desperation. They are part of the game since outside of it, they have a bleak future with insurmountable debts, and the game only could save them.
The Netflix show, when it was released, became an overnight success, and ofcourse, became the perfect meme fodder. Fans were quick to notice the giant robot doll overseeing the Red Light, Green Light game.
