On This Day (Apr. 15): SRH Creates IPL History With 287 Runs on the Board

At the home ground of RCB, SRH embarrassed its bowlers and scored the highest ever runs by a team

In the last few years, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has become a batting paradise, with teams normalising 200 on the board. However, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) went one step further, hitting 250 on multiple occasions, and in one match in 2024, they scored 287 runs. The score became the IPL's highest runs ever scored by a team in the history of the tourney.

Head’s hundred

At the home ground of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), where the boundaries are short, SRH batters went all guns blazing on the evening of April 15, 2024. Abhishek Sharma started the batting mayhem with 34 runs off 22 balls, whereas on the other end, Travis Head batted as if he were playing the EA Cricket 2007 video game. In merely 41 balls, Head hit 102 runs at a strike rate of 248.78, which included nine boundaries and eight maximums.

SRH’s batting riot did not end with Sharma and Head. It continued as Heinrich Klassen added another 67 runs in 31 balls, whereas Aiden Markram contributed 32 runs in 17 balls, followed by Abdul Samad’s 37 runs in 10 balls at a strike rate of 370.

RCB’s poor economy

The stadium went silent as the night turned harrowing for the RCB bowlers. Apart from Will Jacks, who had an economy of 10.66, none of the RCB bowlers could keep it below 10. Mahipal Lomror conceded 18 runs in his one over, whereas Reece Topley gave away 68 runs in his four overs.

A close battle

Despite the steep chase, RCB did not falter at the beginning, as Virat Kohli scored 42 runs in 20 balls, whereas Faf du Plessis added 62 runs in 28 balls. Unfortunately, the middle class of Will Jacks, Rajat Patidar and Saurav Chauhan broke RCB’s momentum, but Dinesh Karthik had other plans.

In the lower order, Karthik scored a whopping 83 runs in 25 balls, and to everybody’s surprise, Lomror compensated with the bat, hitting 19 runs in 11 balls. Anuj Rawat also followed the flow, adding another 25 runs in 14 balls. Unfortunately, the late contributions from RCB’s lower order weren’t enough for the team to win the game.

SRH not only won the game by 25 runs but also beat their previous record of 277 runs set on March 27, 2024, merely two weeks earlier. In the last 2-3 seasons, SRH, who are traditionally known for their bowling acumen, have become a batting behemoth. Unfortunately, affairs have not been going in their favour this season, as the team struggles in the seventh place.
