The Indian Premier League (2026) is in its second week, but so far, only seven teams have opened their scorebooks. Three teams, i.e., the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Gujarat Titans (GT), are yet to win a game. Of the three mentioned teams, KKR has been a bit lucky, having an abandoned match due to rain, which earned the team a free point against Punjab Kings at the Eden Gardens.

Fortunately, these three teams still have a significant amount of time to catch up to the Mumbai Indians (MI), who hold the record for the longest number of matches in a season before securing their first win.
The horror of 2022
The Mumbai Indians have been one of the best outfits in the history of the IPL, having won IPL titles since 2008 and sharing the title count with CSK. However, in 2022, the team undoubtedly had its worst season ever.
The team started its season on March 27 with a game versus the Delhi Capitals, which they lost by four wickets, and that was the beginning of Mumbai’s losing streak.

- Mumbai Indians have won only 9 out of their 24 games away from home since 2023. Worst win-loss 0.7 ratio.
- Since 2020, MI just won 4 games out of 25 while defending a target of 180 or below in IPL. pic.twitter.com/TIEdvBFAjd
Mumbai Indians lost the following matches:
- Match 14 (6 Apr): Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians - KKR won by 5 wickets.
- Match 18 (9 Apr): Mumbai Indians vs Royal Challengers Bangalore - RCB won by 7 wickets.
- Match 23 (13 Apr): Mumbai Indians vs Punjab Kings - PBKS won by 12 runs
- Match 26 (16 Apr): Mumbai Indians vs Lucknow Super Giants - LSG won by 18 runs
- Match 33 (21 Apr): Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings - CSK won by 3 wickets.
- Match 37 (24 Apr): Mumbai Indians vs Lucknow Super Giants - LSG won by 36 runs.
First win in the eighth game
After seven back-to-back defeats, the Mumbai Indians finally had their first victory of the 2022 season in their eighth match. At DY Patil Stadium, the Mumbai Indians halted the Rajasthan Royals for 158 runs, which was followed by a comfortable chase by the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Tim David. The Indians secured a victory by five wickets, with four balls remaining.
Rest of the season
Given the points deficit, the Mumbai Indians were already out of the tournament and could salvage only three more victories, taking their total tally to four wins and eight points. With 10 defeats, the Mumbai Indians finished the tournament in the 10th spot.

KKR and CSK have both played three matches, whereas GT has two games under its belt without a single victory. Given the three teams’ current form, we will not be surprised if they equal or surpass the Mumbai Indians' record.
