IPL 2026: May 1 to May 8 – A Crazy Week That Left Fans Questioning the League

As Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in a nine-run thriller, several on social media platforms questioned the integrity of the tournament

In the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), all the teams have played 10 games and are merely four matches away from either reaching the playoffs or getting knocked out of the tournament. In fact, last night, LSG were on the verge of the exit gate until they pulled off a nine-run thriller against third-placed Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who are in hot form. On the one hand, fans rejoiced in the victory; on the other hand, some questioned the integrity of the game.

And the questions did not arise because of last night’s game; they arose because of how an entire week in the IPL panned out.

Dominance of top teams

Before the week between May 1 and May 8, the tournament was getting heavily dominated by the likes of Punjab Kings (PBKS), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The dominance was such that the Punjab Kings stayed at the top of the table for the longest time, and no other team except RR, RCB, and SRH reached the top four. Even now, they continue to hold a position in the top four, but their dominance appears to be waning, coinciding with a period of relative boredom in the tournament.

Turn around by strugglers

Suddenly, teams positioned in the middle and bottom of the table have begun to secure victories against the top four. A team's initial victory may be deemed a fluke or a change in fortune. But if all the struggling teams have a turnaround, it is not called a coincidence.

For example, DC defeated RR by 7 wickets; KKR also defeated SRH by 7 wickets; GT also defeated PBKS; and last night, LSG defeated RCB.

Playoffs confirmation

At a juncture when the top teams should’ve breached 15 or 16 points to secure a place in the playoffs, all of a sudden, it seems a balance is taking place between all the teams in terms of competition to ensure matches remain exciting. For example, Punjab should’ve had 16 points, but they lost their last three consecutive games, whereas Bengaluru lost their last two matches.

Integrity of the tournament

For the longest time, the integrity of the IPL has been a buzz on social media platforms, where certain sections of fans have questioned whether the tournament is scripted. However, this season, with the majority of matches going past 200 on flat-deck pitches and bowlers having very limited control over the game, fans are definitely not happy with how the IPL is being managed.

In the next season and beyond, will the IPL management address these genuine concerns raised by fans? Only time will tell.
