The team suffered a massive defeat at the hands of the Netherlands in 2014 and since then has not been able to turn things around
No empire lasts forever, be it that of a king, a government, or a footballing nation. In this article, we take a look at the World Cup campaigns of a champion football nation that has suffered a massive downfall—Spain, which lifted the title in 2010 by defeating the Netherlands. Unfortunately, that was the end of Spain’s elegant run in the World Cup. Since then, the team has won only three games and is desperate for a victory in the ongoing edition.

One of the most shocking results in World Cup history.

In 2014, the Netherlands avenged their 2010 defeat by thrashing Spain with a scoreline of 5-1. The Dutch scored five goals against Spain and left them humiliated. In the following game, Spain lost to Chile by 2-0, and in the third game, the team finally tasted victory with three goals against Australia.
2018
In 2018, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brilliant hat-trick against Spain, which led to a draw. In the second game, Spain secured a victory over Iran, whereas in the third match, Spain drew with Morocco. Through one victory and two draws, Spain collected five points and moved to the round of 16.
Since winning the 2010 World Cup, Spain have not won a single knockout game at the competition 😮❌🏆

Unfortunately, in the round of 16, Spain drew with Russia and went home after losing in the penalty shootout.
2022
Spain got off to a brilliant start in 2022, scoring seven goals against a minnow like Costa Rica. However, in the second game, Germany denied them victory, and both sides ended in a 1-1 draw. Spain’s campaign went further downhill when they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Japan.
However, one victory and a draw meant Spain had reached the round of 16 again, only to be defeated by Morocco in a penalty shootout. Spain could not score a single goal in the penalty shootout, which ended 0-3 in Morocco’s favour.

Since 2014, the team has won only three World Cup matches against the likes of Australia, Iran, and Costa Rica.
In recent years, Spain won the 2023 Nations League and the 2024 European Championship, but they once again started poorly in the World Cup, drawing against Cape Verde. Therefore, Spain desperately needs to win matches, not just one but the remaining two in the group, and hopefully, they will reach the round of 16.
