India Becomes 3rd Country In Revenue Percent Growth On Netflix: Which Films & Shows Made This Happen?

The streaming platform recently released its second-quarter earnings for 2024.

The popularity of OTT content among Indians has increased consistently over the years, especially since the pandemic. And that is quite reflected in the data. Streaming giant Netflix recently shared its second-quarter earnings for 2024, which indicates a significant surge in its business in India. Precisely, our country ranked third in terms of revenue growth percentage during the second quarter of 2024. Also, it’s now the second-largest market for the platform in terms of paid subscriber additions.

Notably, Netflix garnered an additional 8.05 million subscribers globally, out of which 2.83 million are from the Asia-Pacific region. Moreover, its overall revenue increased 16.8% year-on-year to $9.56 billion - out of which $1.05 billion is from the Asia-Pacific region.

"I think India's growth is a story that we see around the world playing out very similarly." - Theodore A. Sarandos, co-CEO, president & director, Netflix

Several international shows this year, including 'Bridgerton 3', 'Baby Reindeer', 'Queen of Tears', and 'Under Paris', have performed brilliantly on Netflix. As far as Indian films and shows are concerned, the list includes a number of names that made this happen. Below, let's have a look at them.

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar' occupies the number one spot. The show premiered on May 1 this year and emerged as the most-viewed Indian series on Netflix within just one week. It has garnered over 15 million views to date.

Speaking about the show's success, Monika Shergill, Vice-President - Content, Netflix India, shared, "It is so thrilling and gratifying to see that all the love for Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar has made it the most viewed Indian series in the first week of its launch. When we embarked on this journey a few years ago, we knew we were creating something special that audiences would fall in love with, in India and around the world."

Amar Singh Chamkila

Imtiaz Ali-directed 'Amar Singh Chamkila', starring Diljit Dosanjh in the titular role, was released on Netflix on April 12, 2024. The film received enormous positive reviews from both critics and audiences alike and was all set to create new records. However, little did anyone know that it would go on to be one of the most successful films on the platform.

To date, 'Amar Singh Chamkila' has 8.3 million views to its credit.

Laapataa Ladies

'Laapataa Ladies' was a moderate success at theatres. However, the Kiran Rao directorial reached new heights as soon as it premiered on Netflix (on April 26, 2024). Thanks to its unique storyline, brilliant use of situational humor, and obviously the remarkable performances of its lead cast, the film became a huge success.

And you would be surprised to know that it garnered 13.8 million views on the platform, surpassing several high-budget films including 'Animal'. And it continues to make waves even today.

The list obviously doesn't end here. Besides these films & shows, it also includes 'Srikanth', 'Maharaja', ‘Fighter’, ‘Kota Factory’, and 'Shaitaan' among others.
