On the majority of occasions, one of the two teams enjoyed victories with a more significant margin
India is set to kick off its T20 international season of 2025 with a five-match series against England. The first game is scheduled to be played on January 22 at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. While the Men in Blue have received severe flak in their recent Test outings, hopes are high from the T20I squad that has played a dominant role since last year when the team lifted the ICC T20I World Cup.
Even the transition has been smooth, with new captain Suryakumar Yadav having already led the team to multiple series victories. Every team loves victories, but they adore the ones won by huge margins. In short, rubbing the opponent's nose in the dust is a different feeling.
When it comes to India versus England, it is India that has won multiple games with huge margins against the English side.
Ahead of the January 22 game, check out the top five largest victories between India and England in T20Is—the top five being in India's favour.
India won the ICC T20I World Cup in 2007, the first-ever edition of the tournament, which was also a new format for the world. Cut to 2012, T20 was still a fresh format, but India, thanks to the IPL, learned to score big and defend. During the 10th match of the ICC T20I World Cup 2012, India faced England and ended up scoring 171 runs. In the second innings, bowlers like Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla, and Ashok Dinda reduced England to 80 runs in 14.4 overs—a colossal victory by 90 runs.
During the third game of England's T20 tour in India in 2017, India batted first and posted a steep target of 202, thanks to MS Dhoni's 63 and Suresh Raina's 56. A fight was expected from the English batters, but Yuzvendra Chahal had other plans. Chahal's bowling ran riot against the English batter as he sent them back to the pavilion in quick succession. England succumbed to 127 runs, and India registered a 75-run victory, courtesy of Chahal's six for 25.
In 2024, India clashed against England at Providence for the semifinal game of the ICC T20I World Cup. Batting first, Rohit Sharma's 57 and Suryakumar Yadav's 47 helped India post a score of 171 runs. In response, England managed only 103 runs as Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Jasprit Bumrah choked the English batting line-up, gifting India a 69-run victory.
Even the next four largest victories in T20Is between India and England belong to India. In 2022, India registered a 50-run victory over England in Southampton, whereas in Birmingham, it was a 49-run victory. In 2021, India beat England by 36 runs in Ahmedabad. Not to forget, nearly two decades ago, in 2007, India defeated England by 18 runs in Durban.
In short, India holds the seven largest T20I victory margins. England only has one two-digit victory margin registered over India, which happened in Nottingham in 2022, when England defeated India by 17 runs.
