India has lost the ODI series in Australia and now aims to turn around the T20I series in its favour. The Men in Blue may have had tough luck in ODIs and Tests, but in recent years, India has become the most dominant T20I side. Currently, the T20 World Champion, India, has an edge over Australia in the format, having won 20 of 32 games since the T20I format began. In fact, do you know that India has won the last three consecutive T20I series against Australia?
As India and Australia take on each other for the five-match series, let’s look back at India’s performances in the last three.
Australia tour of India 2023/24

Australia visited India for a five-match T20I series, and the Baggy Greens managed only one victory, whereas India won four. Indian batters showcased their batting prowess, with Ruturaj Gaikwad becoming the top run scorer with 223 runs, whereas Suryakumar Yadav and Yashasvi Jaiswal were the second and third top run scorers of the series. Moving on to bowlers, Ravi Bishnoi grabbed nine wickets in five matches, whereas Axar Patel was the third-highest wicket-taker in the series.
Australia tour of India 2022

Even in 2022, it was the Aussies who visited India for a three-match T20I series. Australia kicked off well, winning the first game in Mohali by 4 wickets. However, India fought back in the second game, aided by rain, which reduced the game to just eight overs. The Baggy Greens managed 90 runs, and in response, a 46-run hitathon by Rohit Sharma in 20 deliveries helped India chase the target. The last match also went in India’s favour, thanks to four crucial wickets from Axar Patel.

In 2020/2021, India embarked on a three-match series in Australia, exerting pressure on the hosts from the first game followed by a second victory. However, Australia avoided a complete whitewash by defeating India in the third and final game of the series. T Natarajan grabbed headlines for his six wickets in three matches, becoming the highest wicket-taker in the series.
Super Eight

One cannot overlook India’s last T20 match against Australia, which was played over a year ago in the 2024 T20 World Cup. India and Australia had clashed in the Super Eight stage, with India emerging victorious, thanks to Rohit Sharma’s 91 runs off 41 deliveries and Arshdeep Singh’s three wickets in four overs. India eventually went on to lift the world title.
Next year, teams will once again clash in the T20 World Cup 2026, and India will hope to keep its momentum going to defend its title. Winning against Australia will boost the team’s morale, and from here on, every T20I match will be part of India’s preparation for the World Cup.
