ICC Women’s T20 WC: West Indies Riding on the Shoulder of Hayley Matthews

Matthews has not just been a leader in spirit, her performances over the past 18 months speak volumes.

As the West Indies Women prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup in October, all eyes are on their captain, Hayley Matthews. After leading her team through a challenging phase in women’s cricket, Matthews is ready to take on the responsibility of revitalizing a squad that has historically been strong but has recently fallen behind.

Facing Challenges Head-On

The West Indies Women’s cricket team, once at the pinnacle of T20 success, is currently ranked sixth, a stark reminder of their journey since their 2016 World Cup triumph. Matthews acknowledges the gap that has formed between the Windies and other teams but emphasizes her commitment to doing “double the work” needed to close that divide. Her leadership has been marked by a willingness to put in the extra effort, both on and off the field, to ensure the team’s growth.

Building a Supportive Environment

Since taking over the captaincy in 2022 from Stafanie Taylor, who had an impressive seven-year tenure, Matthews has focused on creating a positive culture within the team. She highlights the initiatives launched by Cricket West Indies (CWI) to foster talent, including the establishment of the Women’s Rising Stars Under-19s program and the West Indies Women’s Academy. These initiatives signal a shift towards investing in the future of women’s cricket in the Caribbean.

Matthews reflects on her own journey, saying, “The most important thing is falling in love with the game.” This passion fuels her drive to uplift her teammates, ensuring they are equipped not just with skills but with the right mindset to thrive.

On-Field Brilliance

Matthews has not just been a leader in spirit; her performances speak volumes. Over the past 18 months, she has demonstrated her capability as a game-changer. Her explosive innings, including a 132 off 64 balls against Australia, showcases her ability to lead from the front. Matthews also contributed significantly during West Indies’ recent tours, scoring three half-centuries in Pakistan and two centuries in Sri Lanka.

These achievements underscore her dual role as both captain and key player. She takes inspiration from Taylor’s exemplary leadership, understanding the importance of setting a standard for others to follow. “I’ve tried to emulate that part of it and just being at the front of the team,” Matthews shares, reflecting her commitment to leading by example.

All roads lead to the WC

Looking towards the T20 World Cup, Matthews expresses cautious optimism about her team’s prospects. They find themselves in a competitive Group B, alongside England, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Scotland. Despite being viewed as underdogs, Matthews believes in the potential for a surprising performance, reminiscent of their past successes.

She acknowledges, “It only takes one really big performance on a day.” With the unpredictability of T20 cricket, Matthews knows that if her teammates can bring their best to the field, they stand a chance to upset more established sides.

The Driving Force

Adding to the West Indies’ excitement is the return of DeandraDottin, who recently reversed her retirement decision. Known for her explosive batting and game-changing capabilities, Dottin’s presence adds depth and experience to the squad. Matthews appreciates Dottin’s commitment, stating, “She is someone who, when she steps onto the field, she is going to give 100 percent every single time.”

This collaboration could prove pivotal as the team heads into the World Cup, combining youth and experience to create a balanced unit.

With Hayley Matthews at the helm, the West Indies Women have the potential to reclaim their status in world cricket. Her leadership, coupled with her on-field performances and the support of seasoned players like Dottin, could be the driving force behind a successful campaign. As they gear up for the T20 World Cup, the Windies will look to Matthews not just as a captain, but as a catalyst for change and growth in their cricketing journey.
