Happy Birthday Suriya: From Vel To Maattrraan, 6 Times The Actor Tapped On His Dual Roles To Impress Audience

Suriya recently confirmed that he will play a double role in his upcoming film Kanguva, with director Siva.

Saravanan Sivakumar, well known as Suriya, is an actor and film producer. Working primarily in Tamil cinema, he is one of the highest paid actors. Recently, he left his fans surprised when he shared a new poster from his upcoming film Kanguva, with director Siva, and revealed how he is playing a double role in the film. In the poster, Suriya can be seen in two different avatars.

Now as the actor celebrates his 49th birthday today on July 23, it cannot go unnoticed that he has played double roles in as many as 6 films, with Kanguva being his seventh project in dual roles. In fact, the actor, who made his debut in cinema with the film 'Nerukku Ner', has managed to impress the audience with his choice of dual roles over the years. 'Perazhagan' - 2004

The much-loved actor played the dual role for the first time in the film 'Perazhagan', and was seen as Chinna and Karthik. In the film, both Suriya and his wife Jyothika both played dual roles. Directed by Sasi Shanker, the film was remade from the 2002 Malayalam film 'Kunjikoonan'.

'Vel' - 2007

Suriya next played the roles of twin brothers Vasu and Vel, who get split at birth and are taken in and raised by different families. While one brother becomes an officer, the other becomes an influential man. Asin played the female lead while Kalabhavan Mani was seen as the antagonist. It was directed by Hari.

'Vaaranam Aayiram' - 2008

The story of 'Vaaranam Aayiram' revolves around a NSG officer who ends up rescuing someone after the news of his father's disappearance. The actor played a double role as a father and son for the first time, and was even seen in different age looks in the film, directed by Gautham Menon. It is one of the biggest blockbusters of Suriya.

'7aum Arivu' - 2011

In the film, Suriya played a double role of a circus artist and as the Buddhist monk named Bodhidharma. Helmed by AR Murgadoss, the film is about a biological war between two of the most populous nations on earth. It starred Shruti Haasan as the female lead while Johnny Tri Nguyen played the main antagonist. The film was chosen by the SIFCC as India’s submission for the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film category.

'Maattrraan' - 2012

The actor was seen in the role of conjoined twins in 'Maattrraan', which was directed by KV Anand. It revolved around the story of the twins trying to save their father's prosperous career from a Russian spy. Kajal Aggarwal played the female lead.

'Massu Engira Masilamani' - 2015

Lastly, Suriya played the dual role as a father and son in 'Massu Engira Masilamani', and appeared in roles of a criminal Maasu, and as an intelligence officer Shakthivel. 'Massu Engira Masilamani', which was directed by Venkat Prabhu, was released in Telugu as 'Rakshasudu', and was even remade in Bengali as 'Naqaab'.
