The world, as we know, is not an easy place to survive. Family is often considered the backbone, but alongside family, another relationship stands by a person through thick and thin, i.e., friendship. In fact, in today’s world, where the concept of the joint family is next to nil, friendship stands the test of time in every field, including sports.
This Friendship Day, we take a look at some of the top friendship duos from the world of sports.

One of the greatest partnerships ever to grace Spanish club Barcelona, Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi and Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez ripped through the line-up of other clubs with goals and assists. The duo played 258 games together, winning 187 of them. Playing together, the duo lifted four La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey titles, and one Champions League title. Nearing retirement, the two legends now play together for Inter Miami in MLS.

It is rare to have such a friendship between two players who represent different countries. Fortunately, AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli shared the same dressing room at Royal Challengers Bangalore, which gave rise to a legendary camaraderie in the world of cricket. The two players racked up thousands of runs while representing Bengaluru in the IPL. This season, when the Royal Challengers won the IPL, Virat Kohli invited Villiers to lift the trophy even though the South African batter is retired.
