In the last 10 years, there have been only four hat-tricks in El Clasicos
El Clasico, i.e., Real Madrid vs. Barcelona, is a 122-year-old football rivalry. However, despite being such an old rivalry, there have been a total of only 28 hat-tricks in El Clasico, which proves how hard the battle is on the field—the quality of players. What about the number of hat-tricks in the last 10 years? Four! The number stands at four.
As the Blaugrana and Royal Whites get ready to take on each other this Sunday, let us revisit the four hat-tricks in El Clasicos in the last ten years.
Messi’s hat-trick in a 4-3 victory against Real Madrid in 2014 was somewhat a bit boring. However, call us biased, but if there’s an opportunity to draught Messi’s name anywhere in our article, we usually like to do it on the top. His first goal was a spectacular piece of work in the face of Madrid fans at the Bernabeu, as six Madrid players stood speechless inside the penalty box.
For Madrid, the season under Julen Lopetegui did not bear much fruit as the team struggled in the La Liga and even in the Champions League, getting eliminated at the hands of Ajax in the R16. Therefore, Barcelona’s performance 5-1 win was not a significant surprise for the Cules, which included a super hat-trick by Luis Suarez. While his first goal was a penalty, the second was a cheeky opportunistic header, and the third was a beautifully crafted, skilful volley. Suarez would’ve ended with four goals had his other acrobatic shot gone between the posts instead of hitting them.
While Barcelona has been putting efforts to change its fortune in the ongoing season of 2024/2025, the last season of 2023/24 wasn’t a memorable one for the Cule and their former manager, Xavi. The team saw Barcelona winning zero titles, especially losing the final of the Supercopa de Espana on January 14, 2024, by three goals with a scoreline of 4-1, thanks to Vinicius Junior’s three goals.
The first was an open goal where he beat the keeper and went past him to score into the empty nets, whereas the second was a simple slide-in, courtesy of a precise pass from the right to the left of the penalty box by Rodrygo. The third was a penalty and all three goals were scored within 45 minutes by Junior.
The least impressive hat-trick in the last 10 years belongs to Karim Benzema. Against Barcelona in a Copa del Rey game, Benzema’s first goal was a tap-in, as he was present in the right place at the right time. His second goal was a straightforward shot from the penalty arc, literally a gift by Barcelona defenders who did not mark him at all. The third was a penalty, and these goals by him were scored in merely 12 minutes, the first being scored in the 45th, whereas the penalty was awarded in the 57th minute.
In the upcoming game, while expectations will be high for Mbappe to hit a hat-trick, any player from Barcelona could rise to the occasion given they have found a newfound direction under Hansi Flick.
