Birthday Special: What’s Next for Sara Ali Khan? A Look at Her Upcoming Projects

With a mix of OTT, biopics, mysteries, and ensemble dramas, Sara is trying to make smarter career choices.

Sara Ali Khan, daughter of actors Amrita Singh and Saif Ali Khan, kicked off her acting career in 2018 with two successful films, romantic drama Kedarnath and the action comedy Simmba. Post that, she went on to star in the drama Atrangi Re (2021) apart from the romantic comedy Zara Hatke Zara Bachke (2023).

As she celebrates her 30th birthday on August 12, the Bollywood star finds herself at a vital juncture in her career, and it looks like she is in a mood for reinvention. Since her debut in Kedarnath (2018), she has seen a few commercial highs, along with a few missteps. In the past couple of years, she has made a noticeable shift in her role choices.

If you look at her recent work, you will get a lowdown on what audiences can expect in the months to come. She was seen in Ae Watan Mere Watan, which was released on Amazon Prime Video. Helmed by Kannan Iyer, the film saw her in a completely new avatar as she played Usha Mehta, the young Gandhian who ran an underground radio station during the Quit India Movement in 1942. The patriotic drama offered a significant departure from her glam-girl image, and gave her an intense, historically rooted role.

Sara also starred in Netflix’s whodunit Murder Mubarak, helmed by Homi Adajania and an eclectic cast of Karisma Kapoor, Vijay Varma, Pankaj Tripathi, Dimple Kapadia. Her involvement in a genre like this seemed refreshing and she is choosing more offbeat, character-driven stories.

Sara was last seen on screen in Metro... In Dino. Helmed by Anurag Basu, the ensemble drama starred Aditya Roy Kapur, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma. Being a spiritual sequel to Basu's acclaimed 2007 film Life in a... Metro. In Metro... In Dino, the film saw Sara as one of the central characters navigating modern relationships in a rapidly changing cityscape. The film gave her an opportunity to grow emotionally as an actor in this multi-narrative blend of love, loss, and connection.

Moving ahead, she will be seen in Jagan Shakti’s action thriller with Tiger Shroff. The details and title of the film are under wraps, but it promises to showcase her in a more physically demanding and adrenaline-filled role. The high-octane narrative would seemingly be filmed at international locations, and will place her in an action-oriented space — a shift beyond romance and drama.

A Turning Point in Her Career

After a string of setbacks in films like Love Aaj Kal (2020) and Coolie No. 1 (2020), Sara is known to bounce back. Now, with a mix of OTT, biopics, mysteries, and ensemble dramas, Sara is trying to make smarter career choices and pick directors and stories that challenge her as a performer.

As Sara Ali Khan enters a new year, she enters a phase that could define her next phase in Bollywood. Happy Birthday, Sara!
