Bappi Aparesh Lahiri, born on November 27, 1952, was fondly known as Bappi Da. He passed away on February 15, 2022 at the age of 69.
Bappi Lahiri, known mostly as Bappi Da, remains one of the most loved singers, composers and record producers in the Indian film industry. In fact, he was the one who popularised the use of synthesised disco music, and has left an indelible mark on the music industry of India. His tragic demise on February 15, 2022, caused an irreparable dent, but his songs remain immortal and are loved by people of all age groups.
However, one of the striking features of his personality was his deep love for gold. During his public appearances, he was often seen adorning heavy gold jewellery, including multiple chains and rings. Over the period of time, his look with all the gold jewellery became a massive part of his personality. So, how did he develop his deep found love for gold?
Well, it is believed that due to American vocalist Elvis Presley, Bappi Lahiri was obsessed with gold. Since childhood, Bappi Da idolised American musician Elvis Presley, and he was the one who inspired him to adorn multiple gold chains and gold jewellery. He had thought of creating his own signature look when he became successful, and when he did become successful, he came up with his "golden jewellery", and even thought of gold to be "lucky" for him.
He had once also revealed during an appearance on a popular singing reality show, “When my first film Zakhmee was a success, my mother gave it to me and since then gold has been very lucky for me as every song was a hit after this. I was also really fascinated with the way Elvis Presley has his own identity and I too decided to have my own, and here I am today.”
Nonetheless, no one could really get over his signature look, and he has inspired generations to come with both his music and his personality.
Interestingly, Bappi Lahiri kicked off his Bollywood musical journey in 1973. But do you know that his first tryst with music was at the age of 3? Born as Alokesh Lahiri in 1952 in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri, he learned to play the tabla at a very early age, after he was trained by his parents. He not only went on to be known as the King Of Disco, but was also awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by Filmfare in 2018. Previously in 1986, he was recognised by Guinness World Records for recording more than 180 songs in a single year.
