Helmed by Abbas Tyrewala, 'Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na' stars Imran Khan and Genelia D'Souza alongside Prateik Babbar, Manjari Fadnis, and Ayaz Khan among others.
"... a breezy entertainer which will be loved by its target audience – the youth," wrote Taran Adarsh in his review of 'Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na'.
'Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na' is that comfort film that you can watch countless times without getting bored. It makes you smile even during distress, and more importantly, makes you feel at home no matter how far you are. And it feels like a tight hug from your best friends - no questions, no judgments, only love!
It has been 16 years since 'Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na' happened. We have grown a lot ever since then; however, the film holds the same appeal even today. It's because themes of love and friendship are timeless, and resonate with us differently at various stages of life. And whether it's the storyline, the stellar dialogues, the heartwarming music, the brilliant performances, or simply the charm of the whole narrative - there's pure magic in literally every frame that touches the deepest part of our souls. Jay singing "Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na" at the airport continues to make us laugh out loud. Jiggy, Bombs, Rotlu, and Shaleen feel like our own friends. And Aditi... well, leave it, because words cannot justify!
“Everyone sets out to make a relatable film, but some connections go personal. 'Jaane Tu..Ya Jaane Na' was a story of a lot of people and youngsters who have lived it or felt it." - Genelia D'Souza
To mark the film's 16th anniversary, we share an interesting fact about it that you probably didn't know.
Yes, you read it absolutely right! The film was originally supposed to be produced by Jhamu Sugandh with a different star cast. Imran Khan was always the first choice of director Abbas Tyrewala for the role of Jay. However, there was a different actress initially for the role of Aditi. In fact, they shot a few portions (including the song sequence, “Kabhi Kabhi Aditi") with that actress.
As Imran Khan later shared in one of his interviews, "Our cast was completely different at the time. Genelia was not in the film at that point. It was a different actress."
The film was then stalled for around nine months due to financial issues. It was during this time that Aamir Khan came on board as the producer. As the actress (for Aditi) had already moved on to another project, the team started taking auditions for a new actress for the role. And it was eventually played by Genelia.
The rest, as they say, is history!
Genelia had already established herself as a rising star before she starred in 'Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na'. However, she still had to give multiple auditions to bag the role of Aditi. In her own words, "When you do an Aamir Khan production, you have to test to get the film. There were three screen tests that I did before finally getting the role. There was a month of reading and hanging out together. All of that really helped because we were friends before we knew it. It was such a natural process."
"It was really cool as we were going to shoot the final screen test to see how it looked. I remember Imran telling me that he was more comfortable with the other girl than with me. And then, when he went and saw it [his scene with me] on the screen, it was a totally different thing! It looked like we were best pals forever,” she added.
So, how about rewatching the film today?
