Trivia: Zinc Spark – the Spark of Life That Gave Us a Start

The human reproduction system is a scientific process that has fascinated us scientists for an extended period of time

The world is aware of the human reproduction system and how it works—at least most of Earth’s population knows the basics. However, many may not be mindful of the zinc spark, the spark of life that gave us a start.

Sperm and egg

As we are well aware, when a sperm enters an egg and fertilises it, a zygote is created, which eventually becomes a foetus, which turns into a baby.

One sperm only

It is also known that out of millions of sperm cells, only one emerges as the strongest to fertilise an egg. The rest of the sperm cells die.

Northwestern Medicine

Northwestern Medicine's research in 2016 found a substance called zinc spark, which is also part of the reproductive system.

Spark of Life

According to the research, when a sperm fertilises an egg, the egg releases a spark of zinc. This spark means the egg is activated by the sperm—as if the soul enters the egg, which eventually becomes a human.

Marla Paul’s

Marla Paul, one of the researchers from Northwestern Medicine, said, “A stunning explosion of zinc fireworks occurs when a sperm enzyme activates a human egg, and the size of these sparks is a direct measure of the quality of the egg and its ability to develop into an embryo, according to new research from Northwestern Medicine.”
