Surrounded by picturesque Dalma hills, this city has no dearth of factories
Coorg, or Kodagu, in Karnataka is known as the ‘Scotland of India’, and there are many Indian hill stations that are dubbed the ‘Switzerland of India’. But have you ever heard of the ‘Pittsburgh of India’, named after the American city Pittsburgh, which is renowned for its industries?
Founded by Jamshedji Tata, Tatanagar, or Jamshedpur, is an industrial city in the state of Jharkhand, surrounded by the picturesque Dalma hills.
It is known as the Pittsburgh of India because the city houses over 1,500 factories, including Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO), India’s largest and oldest iron and steel producer.
Other major factor plants include 6 BOC Gases, Tata Motors, Tata Ryerson, Usha Martin, Lafarge Cement, Praxair, Tinplate, Tata Power, Telcon, Tata Robins Frazer or TRF, Tata Steel Growth Shop (TGS), Tata Bluescope, Timken India, Jamshedpur Injection Powder (JAMIPOL), Tayo Rolls, Tata Pigments, Tata Tube Division, Indian Steel and Wire Products Limited (ISWP), Uranium Corporation of India (UCIL), and Jamshedpur Utilities and Service Company (JUSCO).
The city is also a popular tourist destination for the people of Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, and Bihar. There are several places to visit, especially the Dimna Lake and Dam, an artificial reservoir covering an area of 1,861 acres.
Last but not least, several eminent personalities were either born or raised in Jamshedpur – some of them are Ratan Tata, Jahar Dasgupta, Varun Aaron, Imtiaz Ali, Priyanka Chopra, Tanushree Dutta, Adarsh Gourav and R. Madhavan.
