Did you know that ‘Million Dollar Baby’ became the first song to top the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart for ten consecutive weeks, starting in May 2024?
TikTok has revealed its lineup of the most popular tracks and artists that dominated the airwaves this summer, both at home and abroad. Announcing the list, the platform declared that “the summer has been an iconic one for music.” The rankings, based on the total number of times songs were used in videos throughout Summer 2024, simplify the process by focusing on how often each track was featured in user-generated content. The buzz around this year's summer anthem started early, sparked by the release of Tommy Richman's breakout hit ‘Million Dollar Baby’ and Sabrina Carpenter's ‘Espresso’ weeks before the season officially kicked off.
This summer, more than half (60%) of the Top 10 global songs on TikTok were independently distributed, highlighting the platform's influence in promoting diverse musical talent. TikTok's ‘Songs of the Summer’ list reflects this evolving landscape, giving rising newcomers like Jordan Adetunji a spot alongside established icons like Billie Eilish. “We're proud to continue helping emerging artists all over the world to break through ... as well as provide a platform for the world's biggest artists to connect with fans,” TikTok stated.

For those who predicted back in May that Tommy Richman's ‘Million Dollar Baby’ would claim the title of song of the summer, TikTok has confirmed your hunch by placing Richman in the top spot. Tinashe comes in second with her hit ‘Nasty,’ which inspired fans to make over 10 million videos, according to TikTok. Blood Orange's ‘Champagne Coast’ and ian's ‘Magic Johnson’ secured the third and fourth spots, respectively. Billie Eilish's ‘Birds of a Feather’ and Sabrina Carpenter's ‘Please Please Please’ landed at fifth and sixth. Other tracks that made it to the list include ‘Tell Ur Girlfriend’ by Lay Bankz, ‘Wanna Be’ by GloRilla featuring Megan Thee Stallion, ‘Not Like Us’ by Kendrick Lamar, and ‘KEHLANI’ by Jordan Adetunji.

The song was released on April 26, 2024, through ISO Supremacy and Pulse Records, and later redistributed by Concord and Universal as the lead single from Tommy Richman's upcoming debut studio album, ‘Coyote.’ Despite having little prior commercial history, Richman teased snippets of ‘Million Dollar Baby’ on TikTok, which quickly gained traction. Upon its April release, the song became an instant commercial success and Richman’s breakthrough hit.
‘Million Dollar Baby’ debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the charts in Australia, Latvia, and New Zealand. It also landed within the top ten in numerous other countries. In its first week, the song racked up 38 million official U.S. streams, 302,000 in early radio airplay audiences, and 4,000 downloads sold.
