According to the financial disclosure form Walz, he has no assets other than income from his government job.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz was recently selected as vice-presidential nominee to Kamala Harris by the Democrats. But do you know that the Democratic running mate of Vice President Kamala Harris, who was picked weeks after President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 election contest, is the least wealthy candidate on either major party ticket in the US 2024 Presidential elections.
According to a financial disclosure form Walz filed with the state of Minnesota in this year, he owns no businesses, individual stocks, a home or other real estate. With this kind of financial position, he only has his income from his government job and his wife’s work in education. His wife, Gwen Walz, a career teacher, works at Augsburg University in Minneapolis. Together, they have earned an income of a little over $166,000 in 2022, according to their tax return, out of which $115,485 is Walz’s annual salary as governor.
When he became governor in 2019, he sold his home in Mankato, Minn., and moved into the Minnesota Governor’s Residence in St. Paul. Currently, they live in the University of Minnesota’s president’s house since the governor’s residence is getting remodeled.
Now if he indeed becomes the vice president, Walz would make an earning of $284,600, a major pay raise. However, looking at this nearly blank financial disclosure, it cannot be ruled out that Tim Walz’s financial position is in striking contrast with Sen. JD Vance (Ohio), the Republican nominee for vice president.
To say the least, Walz is certainly among the less wealthy candidates to run for vice president overall. There have been cases of politicians on both sides of the spectrum.
While Hubert Humphrey, who became vice president under Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965, was not a wealthy man, Dick Cheney had an estimated net worth of well over $50 million when he was picked as George W. Bush’s running mate for the 2000 election. Similarly, John Edwards had a reported net worth between $12 million and $60 million when he was chosen John F. Kerry’s running mate in 2004.
Coming back to Walz, he certainly is one of the least wealthy candidates on either major party ticket in 2024.
Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris, who is the Democratic presidential nominee, had revealed during her 2020 presidential run that she and her husband Doug Emhoff, have a combined income of more than $1.8 million in 2018.
As for Sen. JD Vance (Ohio), in his 2022 personal financial disclosure form, confirmed owning more than 150 assets, with its worth between around $4.3 million and $10.8 million. Vance and his wife, Usha, own a home in Northern Virginia. Coming to Biden, he also had a net worth of under $1 million when he ran for vice president.
