Shubman Gill has been appointed as the full-time captain of India’s ODI side, replacing Rohit Sharma

The Indian cricket fans are definitely not happy with the news of Rohit Sharma getting snubbed from the captaincy of the ODI side. Replaced by Shubman Gill, fans are disappointed that, despite winning the Champions Trophy just eight months ago, the captaincy has been handed over to Gill from Sharma. However, the team selectors have the experience and knowledge to decide what’s best for the team, keeping in mind the World Cup 2027.

Moving on to Gill’s captaincy, he is untested as a full-time captain in white-ball cricket, whereas in T20, he has captained only five matches. In short, it is extremely hard for anybody to predict how Gill will perform as a captain in ODIs against Australia. Therefore, we turned to ChatGPT, the AI whose predictions have become a trend in recent times.

According to ChatGPT, when it comes to batting, Shubman Gill will have decent runs on the board in two innings out of three. The scores could be, for example, 70-30-110 or 50-90-40. Gill is expected to be cautious if the conditions are tricky and the team is under pressure. Explosive batting won’t be his way to go, and he will try to control the tempo of the game and anchor the innings because he knows that giving away easy wickets will bring direct criticism from fans and pundits.

How did ChatGPT predict Gill’s possible scores?

To predict Shubman Gill’s possible scores against Australia, ChatGPT took into account Gill’s statistics, such as an average of 59.04 with 8 centuries and 15 in 55 innings. ChatGPT also generated the following statement: “He holds the record for the most runs by a cricketer after 55 ODIs. In the 2025 home ODI series vs England, he scored 112 off 95 and played a pivotal role in that 3-0 sweep. He has had considerable success in other formats and is regarded as a rising leader; recently, he’s broken several records in Test captaincy, including a big double hundred.”

Moving on to Gill’s captaincy, ChatGPT predicted that Gill will rely more on experimenting in field placements, bowling changes, and backing his bowlers. Reading the match in accordance with his temperament will be the approach because he doesn’t have experience on his side.

In the first game, Gill is expected to make decisions hesitantly, but the hesitation will go away in the second and third matches. Unconventional decisions are likely to be on the cards.

India wins?

ChatGPT gave a 50-50 result, putting India's chances in favour if Gill bats decently and takes pressure off the rest of the batting line-up. The series could go either way, 2-1 or 1-1, if one of the games gets washed away. A lot will ride on how Gill uses Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, given they are two of the most senior figures in the team, and Gill will have to utilise them effectively if India wishes to win.

India takes on Australia on October 19, and that’s when we will find out if ChatGPT’s predictions are spot on or a miss!
