Sabzi of the Day - Quick Green Peas Recipes for Easy Homemade Meals

A part of the legume family, peas are pods produced by the Pisumsativum plant

One of the largest producers in the world, Indians and Indian cuisines have a soft corner for peas. Usually, in India, it is harvested in winter, and therefore, it becomes one of the crucial ingredients of winter dishes. Not to forget, these pods are versatile enough to be cooked as a solo dish. Furthermore, peas are super nutritious and an excellent source of protein.

Given the winter season is finally here, here are some easy peas recipes one can try in the next four months.

Quick Peas Curry

Cooking time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • Chilli pepper
  • Onion
  • Tomatoes
  • Garlic
  • Cumin
  • Sugar
  • Garam Masala
  • Turmeric
  • Coriander
  • Coconut Milk
  • Peas in any form (fresh, dried, or frozen)

Recipe

  • Blend onion, tomatoes, chilli pepper, garlic, cumin, garam masala, turmeric, and coriander.
  • In a pan, heat oil and add the above-mentioned blended paste.
  • Once cooked, add the peas and let it simmer.
  • After you have acquired the consistency you wish for, add coconut milk to give the curry a stew-like flavour.
  • Finish by garnishing with coriander.

South Indian Green Peas Masala Stew

Cooking time: 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • Green peas
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Tomato
  • Onion
  • Coriander
  • Chilli powder
  • Turmeric
  • Garam masala
  • Salt
  • Aniseed
  • Cloves

Recipe

  • Soak green peas overnight.
  • Chop onion, ginger, garlic, tomato, and green chillies.
  • Boil the green peas in a pressure cooker.
  • In another pan, roast aniseed and cloves.
  • Then add chopped onion, ginger, garlic, tomato, and green chillies. Keep the flame low and let them sweat it out.
  • Add garam masala, turmeric, and salt, and let the masala cook for another five minutes.
  • Finally, add the green peas with the boiled water from the pressure cooker. Simmer and acquire the consistency you wish for.

MatarPaneer

Cooking time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

  • Paneer
  • Peas
  • Tomatoes
  • Onion
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Chillies
  • Cashews
  • Turmeric powder, red chilli powder, and garam masala powder
  • Cumin seeds
  • Black peppercorns
  • Cardamom
  • Cloves
  • Cinnamon
  • Coriander leaves and seeds

Recipe

  • From the above-mentioned ingredients, blend everything except the paneer, peas, and coriander leaves.
  • Once the blend is done, take a pressure cooker and fry a bit of cumin seeds.
  • After the cumin seeds are fried a bit, pour the entire paste and let it cook for 20 minutes on a low flame.
  • Now add the peas and close the lid. Give as much pressure as you want, depending on how well-boiled the peas you prefer.
  • Open the lid, add your paneer.
  • Garnish the dish with chopped coriander leaves.
  • One can also add a bit of cream, but we prefer to keep the curry as light as possible and as healthy as possible.
