Paris Paralympics 2024: India's Big Wins on Day 9 and Athletes to Watch on Day 10

Praveen’s record-breaking leap secures gold, while Indian athletes gear up for more victories on Day 10

Day 9 of the Paris Paralympics 2024 was a spectacular one for India, with significant wins, new records, and some nail-biting action. What's the highlight? Praveen Kumar, of course! The high jumper soared to gold, adding another medal to India's total and breaking an Asian record in the process. Here's a short look at how our Indian athletes performed on September 6th and what's in store for Day 10.

Praveen Kumar's golden leap

Let's start with the guy of the moment, Praveen Kumar. Remember his silver medal from the Tokyo Paralympics? This time, however, he determined more was needed. Praveen not only won the men's high jump T64 final by clearing 2.08m, but he also broke the Asian record!

His new personal best places him among the top para-athletes. Derek Loccident of the United States won silver with 2.06m, but Praveen stole the show. Poland's Maciej Lepiato and Uzbekistan's TemurbekGiyazov tied for third place with 2.03m, winning equal bronze.

Nagaland's Hokato Sema bags bronze in shot put

Just when you thought things couldn't get much better, Nagaland's own HokatoHotozhe Sema stepped up to the plate. In the men's shot put F57 final, Hokatostruck a tremendous 14.65m on his fourth try, clinching India's 12th bronze medal.

This Paralympic newcomer has undoubtedly left his impression! His colleague, Soman Rana, also made a strong attempt, coming sixth in the same race.

Simran sprints to 200m T12 final

After nearly losing out on a medal in the 100m final, Simran had another chance to win the 200m T12 event. She breezed through her semifinal in 25.03 seconds, accompanied by her guide, Abhay Singh, and advanced to the final. The final race is scheduled for tonight, and all eyes will be on her as she strives for a medal.

Other highlights from day 9

Dipesh Kumar finished seventh in the men's javelin throw F54, and BhavanabenAjabaji Chaudhary placed fifth in the women's javelin throw F46 final with a personal best of 39.70m. It's reasonable to say that India's athletes gave their all, and the results show.

India's medal tally so far

By the end of Day 9, India had risen to 17th in medal tally, with 27 medals—6 gold, 9 silver, and 12 bronze. It's been a record-breaking performance, and the Indian contingent is only getting started!
