OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has been at the forefront of artificial intelligence innovation, paving the way for advancements and solutions for the future. OpenAI revealed the SearchGPT prototype on the 25th of July. It provided a preliminary glimpse into its ability to search and retrieve information. Before the official introduction of the SearchGPT prototype, there was a lot of anticipation surrounding this innovation.
we think there is room to make search much better than it is today.

we are launching a new prototype called SearchGPT: https://t.co/A28Y03X1So
we will learn from the prototype, make it better, and then integrate the tech into ChatGPT to make it real-time and maximally helpful.
The emergence of SearchGPT now positions OpenAI as a potential competitor to Google, which has been dominating the search engine market for a long time, since 1998. When asked how this prototype is supposed to work, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI disclosed that SearchGPT’s latest features would utilise the strength of its advanced AI model along with web data to carry out relevant searches and deliver information in a “fast and timely” manner. By gathering information from relevant sources across the web, SearchGPT will provide precise and extensive responses, gushing in a new era in search technology.
We’re testing SearchGPT, a temporary prototype of new AI search features that give you fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources.

OpenAI has stated that first, the SearchGPT prototype will be made available to select users for gaining feedback. Later, if successful, the company will integrate SerachGPT into ChatGPT, thus revolutionising how people scour for information on the web. This move is perceived as a direct challenge to Google’s long-established dominance in the search engine market. In a recently posted video by Sam Altman, OpenAI exhibited how SerachGPT efficiently searches for information on the web. For instance, if you search ‘music festival in Boone, North Carolina in August’, the prototype responds with information on a list of events, where each event is followed by a short description, source name, and link. It can also answer some specific questions like ‘if Jones House was family-friendly or not.’
In a blog post, OpenAI mentioned: “Getting answers on the web can take a lot of effort, often requiring multiple attempts to get relevant results.” the company has stated that SearchGPT is a preliminary version meant for collecting feedback. The company also hinted at future enhancements in the technology if turns out to be successful.
As per a report by Business Insider, SearchGPT has placed OpenAI in the catbird seat against Google’s SGE (Search Generative Experience) and search functionalities presented by the startup- Perplexity AI. although not publicly available, it is expected that Google’s SGE will help users with AI-generated summaries on topics upon its release. Microsoft plans to hit back at it by incorporating SerachGPT in its Bing Bing browser, aiming to provide quicker and more relevant search results.
According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), Google commands about 90% of the search market, while Microsoft approximately holds 5.5% of the global search market. Google’s long-standing dominance in the search engine market can be countered by Microsoft-backed ventures upon the integration of SerachGPT in their search models.
