On This Day (Sept 14): Happy B’day, Sky: Remembering the Time Suryakumar Yadav Went Undercover on Marine Drive

A video surfaced on Instagram showing him wandering around Mumbai's Marine Drive last year

Suryakumar Yadav, fondly known as "Sky," celebrates his 34th birthday today. From the cricket maidans of Mumbai to the grand arenas of IPL and international cricket, his journey has been one of remarkable determination. Guided by his local coach, Ashok Aswalkar, Surya emerged as a standout talent in Mumbai’s cricket scene. Whether it was his early days at BARC or making waves in the IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians, Surya’s path to stardom was forged through sheer grit. And no, we certainly did not forget the SKY catch that won us the T20I World Cup.

Despite his social media fame and the catchy "Sky" moniker, he remains grounded to those who know him personally. Appointed captain for the Sri Lanka T20 series in 2024, he led India to a series victory. While his ODI stats may not fully reflect his brilliance, Surya has firmly established himself as a vital figure in India’s T20 cricket setup.

Sky's playful stunt at Marine Drive

As we are celebrating Surya’s birthday, we recall the time in 2023 when the cricketer decided to have a little fun with the common masses. A video on Instagram went viral with Surya wandering around Mumbai's Marine Drive, completely unrecognizable in disguise. The clip featured Surya hilariously asking unsuspecting fans about their opinions of him as a cricketer. The video, posted on the Indian Cricket Team's official Instagram page, gave fans a delightful glimpse into Surya's playful side.

The post was captioned, "Presenting Suryakumar Yadav in a never-before-seen avatar! What’s our Mr. 360 doing on the streets of Marine Drive? Shoutout if you were on SURYA CAM last evening." In this unexpected twist, Surya became a cameraman, blending his love for cricket with a bit of creative fun. It allowed fans to see a different side of their hero, capturing candid moments on the bustling streets of Mumbai.

Fooling Jadeja and the fans

Surya's disguise was so convincing that even his teammate, Ravindra Jadeja, didn’t initially recognise him. In a BCCI video, Jadeja admitted he was completely fooled. Surya covered his inked body art with a full-sleeved shirt to perfect his look and wore a face mask, sunglasses, and a cap. His transformation was so thorough that no one could guess they were speaking to a star cricketer.

Armed with this disguise, Surya strolled along Marine Drive, chatting with cricket fans who had no idea who he really was. One fan even suggested that Surya should bat higher to score more runs. After engaging with several fans and recording their candid opinions, Surya finally revealed his true identity to one lucky admirer. The fan was thrilled, snapping a photo with the cricketer before he vanished into the crowds.

Sky goes viral

The playful stunt quickly went viral on social media. Within just three hours, the video racked up nearly three million views. Fans flooded the comments section, praising Surya for his acting skills and playful nature. Comments ranged from "Masti always on" to "Super cool," as many users responded with clapping and fire emojis, showing their excitement for this unexpected glimpse into Surya’s life.

Today, as he turns 34, we wish SKY a successful captaincy ahead and also hope to witness more of his fun activities off the pitch.
