As the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final approaches on June 11, 2025, at Lord's Cricket Ground, the cricketing world watches in anticipation. Teams are battling hard for the ultimate prize in Test cricket. With the WTC cycle entering its final stretch, the road to Lord's promises intense competition.

Top 5 teams in the WTC standings

India

Sitting comfortably atop the WTC standings with 68.52% of possible points, India is determined to go one step further after being runners-up in the last two WTC Finals. Under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, they have won six out of nine matches, with crucial series against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia ahead.

Australia

The reigning WTC champions, Australia, currently hold 62.50% of possible points. Pat Cummins' men have dominated this cycle with eight wins from 12 matches. The Aussies have a series against India and South Africa to ensure their spot in the final, aiming to defend their title at Lord's.

New Zealand

The 2021 WTC winners, New Zealand, stand third with 50% of possible points. Their campaign has seen mixed results, including a draw against Bangladesh, a series win over South Africa, and a defeat to Australia. The Kiwis are pushing hard to make it to their second final in three cycles.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh has been the surprise package, with 45.83% of possible points after a historic 2-0 series win over Pakistan. Despite early losses to Sri Lanka, they bounced back and remain in contention for a place in the final, especially after solid performances against top sides.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka rounds out the top five with 42.66% of possible points. After a shaky start with losses to Pakistan and Bangladesh, they secured a series win against England. With the upcoming series against West Indies and India, Sri Lanka's hopes of qualifying remain alive.

Top run-getters in the WTC so far

Joe Root

England's Joe Root leads the run-scoring charts in the WTC with 4948 runs at an average of 51.26. Root's 16 centuries and 20 fifties across 58 matches have solidified his reputation as a modern-day Test great. His dual centuries against Sri Lanka in August 2024 took him to 34 Test hundreds.

Marnus Labuschagne

Australia's Marnus Labuschagne follows closely behind with 3904 runs at an average of 52.05. Labuschagne has consistently performed, contributing heavily to Australia's WTC success, including 11 hundred. He topped the first WTC cycle with 1675 runs and remains crucial in this edition.

Top wicket-takers in the WTC so far

Nathan Lyon

Australia's off-spinner Nathan Lyon is the leading wicket-taker in the WTC, with 187 wickets at an average of 26.70. Lyon was pivotal in Australia's WTC 2021-2023 title win, taking 88 wickets in that cycle. His current tally of 43 wickets in this edition highlights his continued dominance.

Pat Cummins

Australian skipper Pat Cummins stands second with 175 wickets at an excellent average of 22.81. Cummins has led from the front, consistently providing breakthroughs. His 48 wickets in the ongoing cycle have kept Australia's qualification hopes strong as they eye another WTC title.

Ravichandran Ashwin

India's off-spin wizard Ravichandran Ashwin is third on the list, just behind Cummins, with 174 wickets at an average of 20.43. Ashwin was the top bowler in the WTC 2019-2021 cycle with 71 wickets from 14 matches and continues to be a key figure for India, especially in spin-friendly conditions.

Rohit Sharma's WTC captaincy record

Rohit Sharma has been at the helm of India's WTC campaign since March 2022. His captaincy record is impressive, with India winning 10 of the 16 WTC matches under his leadership. Despite losing the 2023 WTC Final to Australia, Rohit's side has bounced back with series wins against Sri Lanka, Australia, and West Indies.

India's latest success came with a 4-1 thrashing of England at home earlier this year. Rohit's leadership has been praised for his strategic nous, especially in balancing India's strong batting line-up with effective use of their bowlers. He remains India's best hope to secure the elusive WTC trophy.

Rohit has also been in good touch with the bat during his WTC captaincy tenure, amassing 1,090 runs from 16 matches at an average of 41.92. His four centuries, including crucial knocks against Australia and England, have been instrumental in India's journey to the top of the standings.
