IPL Recap: 18 Years of Longevity-Nine Players From 2008 Who Will Feature in 2025

Only nine players from the 2008 IPL season will feature in the upcoming edition

The Indian Premier League (IPL) was inaugurated 17 seasons ago. If we look at 17 years, how cricketers have spent 17 years playing cricket across all formats? Not many, we reckon.

When it comes to IPL, it becomes even tougher given how competitive it is, coupled with the number of local talents who participate in the auction every season.

Therefore, in 2025, only nine players will feature who also participated in the 2008 IPL season.

Rohit Sharma

Five-time IPL-winning captain Rohit Sharma is one of the nine players who was present in 2008. He joined Mumbai Indians in 2011 and has never played for any other franchise.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni

M.S. Dhoni and his IPL exploits are well-known to every cricket fan. The five-time IPL-winning captain will be seen again in the Chennai jersey. As per rumours, the 2025 IPL season could be his last.

Virat Kohli

Wears the jersey no. 18, will feature in the 18th edition of the IPL but never won the trophy. The RCB-loyal Virat Kohli has been with them since 2008, hopeful to lift his maiden trophy this year. Will 18 prove to be his lucky season?

Ishant Sharma

Ishant Sharma joined the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2008 and has played for six different IPL franchises. The Delhi-based pacer joined the Delhi Capitals in 2019 but will be seen donning the Gujarat Titans’ jersey in 2025—his seventh IPL team in 18 seasons.

Ravichandran Ashwin

India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests and considered one of the finest in the world, Ravi started his IPL journey with Chennai. Over the years, he represented several other teams, but in 2025, he will once again don the Chennai jersey.

Ravindra Jadeja

One of the finest all-rounders produced by India, Ravindra Jadeja, started his IPL career with Rajasthan Royals. This season, he will be representing Chennai – a franchise he represented earlier between 2012-2015.

Ajinkya Rahane

This season, Ajinkya Rahane will play as Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain but in 2008, his IPL jersey started in Mumbai with the Indians. Rahane has played for six different IPL franchises.

Manish Pandey

Manish Pandey’s IPL stint started with Mumbai Indians in 2008 but he became a star at Kolkata Knight Riders, winning multiple IPL titles. Not to forget, he is the first India ever to hit a ton in the tourney.

Swapnil Singh

Among all the famous names, Swapnil Singh is a lesser-known name who warmed the bench at the Mumbai Indians camp for years. He has been in and out of several other teams, but last season, he proved to be a crucial member of Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He has only 14 matches under his belt in 18 years.
