Not only scoring runs, but Samson is doing it while maintaining more than a decent average and strike rate
With four matches to go and only 10 points in the bag, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) may not reach the playoffs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. However, we believe they have found something greater for the team’s long-term future, i.e., the addition of Sanju Samson. At a juncture when it seems that Mahendra Singh Dhoni may bid goodbye to the team as a player, Samson is proving his worth, not only with the bat but also behind the stumps.
In the following paragraphs, let us look at his numbers and how they are impacting the team.
400 runs & counting
So far, Sanju Samson has played 10 matches for the Kings and has scored 402 runs. Even if the team fails to reach the playoffs, CSK still has four games in hand, so we expect Samson to finish the season with 550-600 runs, which is brilliant for a player playing for a new team.

Yet another half-century for Sanju Samson as #CSK is cruising towards another victory 💛#TATAIPL Revenge Week 2026 ➡️ #DCvCSK| LIVE NOW 👉https://t.co/hVsFUTS2OG pic.twitter.com/ewcIuYnu99
Sanju is not only racking up runs but also doing so without any selfish motive. His strike rate stands at 167.50, indicating that he accelerates when the required run rate is high, going for the big shots without much regard for his wicket or his own records. His average is 57.43, which is worth noting as well.
Key to CSK’s success
Running out of hands for all these awards! 🏆🙌

Another stat to look at is how whenever Sanju Samson scored more than 40 runs in a match for CSK, the team won that game. In four matches out of 10, Samson scored more than 40 runs, and the team won, whereas on six occasions when Samson scored less than 40 runs, the team only won one and lost five.
Golden mindset
Samson’s mindset is another factor that has led CSK fans to strongly back him. On the evening of May 5, when CSK defeated DC, Samson scored 87 runs and could’ve gone for a century. However, he wrapped up the match early with 15 balls to spare, hitting 87 runs in 52 balls.
Milestones are special, but the team’s victory is priceless 💛

In the post-game interview with Harsha Bhogle, Sanju said, “A hundred is always special. But for that, I would have had to be a bit selfish. I didn't say, 'Take a single, let me get my hundred.' I thought it was better to win the match for the team.”
This kind of mindset gained Samson praise from Sunil Gavaskar, who said, “Patience brings wonderful rewards. He got set and then accelerated. Had Kartik not finished it off with those shots, Samson might have had his century. But he played for the team.”
Samson is definitely impacting CSK in a positive manner, and even though a comparison between him and Dhoni should not be done, we believe Samson is proving to be the perfect replacement for MSD.
