It is no surprise that, despite South Africa being the World Test Champions, AI predicted that India has the capability to win at home

India is set to host South Africa for a two-match Test series at home, with the first match scheduled to be played in Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens stadium. For the record, this will be the stadium’s first Test since 2019, whereas South Africa will return to this venue after a hiatus of 15 years for a Test game.

Given India’s recent Test performances have been a mixed bag of results, we turned to ChatGPT and asked for predictions. Fortunately, the AI predicted results in India’s favour, despite South Africa being the reigning World Test champion.

Here’s how AI reached its conclusion.

Recent forms

The AI began by analysing India and South Africa's recent performances. India put in a resilient performance against England on their own soil, winning two matches, losing two games, and drawing one. ChatGPT also highlighted India’s 2-0 victory against the West Indies.

In contrast, South Africa may have defeated Australia in the final of the World Test Championship but failed to secure a victory against Pakistan, a team that has been struggling in almost every format. A win against Zimbabwe also isn’t convincing for ChatGPT, given Zimbabwe’s cricket quality cannot be called tier-1 compared to the likes of Australia, England, and India.

Star players and squad depth

South Africa boasts a number of talented players, including Temba Bavuma, Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada, and Keshav Maharaj. However, India has a number of superstars in their team, such as Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj.

One also cannot forget the fact that South Africa is visiting India with eight players who have never played a Test match on Indian soil. Therefore, India clearly has the edge compared to Proteas.

Moving on to the final prediction of ChatGPT, it believes India will win the series with one victory and one draw. The AI also explained why India may not enjoy a whitewash by stating, “Why not 2–0? South Africa are WTC champions and have a hardened attack (Rabada/Jansen + quality spin), which is enough to stretch at least one Test match deep. But India’s home advantage, superior spin depth, and Pant’s return tilt the balance. Also, subcontinental conditions plus India’s recent home run vs WI and their England battle-hardening point to India closing key sessions better.”

Individual performances on the cards

ChatGPT ended its prediction with high expectations from the likes of Bumrah, Jadeja, Pant, and Jaiswal from India’s camp, whereas from South Africa’s dugout, a lot can be expected from Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada, and Keshav Maharaj.
