Imagine Bollywood without his unforgettable performances as Jordan, Sid, Kabir, or Ranvijay Singh - we would have missed out on so much magic. But the truth is, acting wasn’t the only path open to him. Ranbir Kapoor, born into Bollywood royalty, had the world at his feet and a host of possibilities to explore. From sports to music, even business, there were several directions he could have taken before he finally stepped into the world of films. And thankfully, he did, gifting us a generation of iconic performances that continue to define contemporary Hindi cinema. Yet, it’s fascinating to wonder if he hadn’t walked onto this path, which path might he have chosen instead? Today, on his birthday, let's take a closer look at the roads not taken in Ranbir Kapoor’s life and explore the careers he might have embraced.

A Filmmaker

Born into the illustrious Kapoor family, with legends like Raj Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor as his forebears, Ranbir was naturally inclined towards the film industry. However, his passion for filmmaking led him to study at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. And during his time there, he directed and starred in two short films, Passion to Love and India 1964. Needless to say, these projects honed his storytelling skills and deepened his understanding of cinema.

Before stepping in front of the camera, Ranbir worked as an assistant director on films like Prem Granth (1996), Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999), and Black (2005). So, his experience behind the scenes gave him a comprehensive view of film production, and in interviews, he has expressed a desire to direct, stating that he would pursue filmmaking if he didn't succeed as an actor. However, he emphasized the importance of having a compelling story to tell and the selflessness required in directing.

A Footballer

During his school days at Bombay Scottish School in Mumbai, Ranbir was immensely passionate about football. He represented his school in various tournaments and even aspired to play professionally. In an interview, he mentioned that if he hadn't become an actor, he would have pursued football as a career.
