The model who turns 60 this November proves that age is just a number with his regular participation in various forms of athletic events
In India, for a long time, modelling was considered a profession reserved only for women. However, it all changed when Milind Soman climbed the ladder of fame by getting featured in Alisha Chinai’s 1995 music video. Indians suddenly learnt about Soman and that he was a model, not an actor. Slowly, Soman ventured into acting but kept modelling on the cards to date.
However, Soman isn’t all about modelling and acting. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, where he lived until the age of seven, Milind took up swimming at the age of six, which he continued after moving to Mumbai. From the age of 10, he started participating in Maharashtra's various swimming competitions, and that’s how his relationship with athletics became a never-ending affair.
As Soman turns 60, we take a look at his achievements as an athlete, an important part of his life and identity that has received very limited limelight.

After representing Maharashtra in swimming at state competitions, Soman moved on to the nationals, and from there he got the opportunity to represent India at the 1984 South Asian Games, earlier known as the South Asian Federation Games, held in Kathmandu. In the tournament's inaugural edition, Soman secured a silver medal, a feat that warrants more frequent discussion.
National Championship
In the domestic circuit, Soman dominated the National Championship in the senior men’s category. For four years in a row, Soman won the swimming championship from 1984 to 1987.

In 2015, Soman took part in the Ironman Challenge, which comprises a 3.8-km swim, a 180.2-km cycle ride, and a 42.2-km run without a single break, and the entire distance must be covered within 17 hours. In his very first try, Soman completed the challenge in 15 hours and 19 minutes. By doing so, he won the Iron Man title.
Ultrathon

In 2017, the actor and model also participated in Florida's Ultrathon, which required participants to cover 520 kilometres in three days. The first day comprised a 10-kilometre swim and a 148-kilometre bike ride, followed by a 276-kilometre bike ride on the second day, whereas the third day involved an 84-kilometre run. Soman was the only participant to complete the challenge barefoot.
Limca Book record holder
Last but not least, the fitness freak is also a Limca Book record holder for running 1,500 kilometres in 30 days for Greenathon.
Soman is a prime example that hitting the gym is not the only way to achieve fitness. Playing sports or participating in athletics is another option people can explore to maintain their fitness.
