Five Bollywood Films That Displayed Wonderful Use Of Prosthetic Make-up

We cannot help but notice how Bollywood has progressed from using low-quality special effects and poor make-up to pushing the limits of prosthetics and VFX.

The smart use of prosthetics can contribute a lot to the development of a character, making it appear more realistic to the audience. This make-up technique has evolved over the years, and is now used masterfully in many films, making some of them quite memorable. So, let us look at some Bollywood films that displayed tremendous use of prosthetic make-up.

Amitabh Bachchan in Paa

This film presented the most brilliant application of prosthetic make-up in Bollywood. Superstar Amitabh Bachchan was beyond recognition in this film as Auro, a 12-year-old with Progeria (a rare genetic disorder). With a smooth baby-like face, glasses, and a bald head, it took the audience a while to recognize him. Big B’s performance and antics played a colossal role in bringing the character to life, but the use of prosthetics is the unsung hero.

Hrithik Roshan in Dhoom 2

Hrithik Roshan in Dhoom 2 played a genius robber who disguised in various avatars to execute the heist. From a mannequin to a queen and an old man, Hritik was seen in astonishingly different looks, and the actor beautifully played all the avatars in the film.

Rajkummar Rao in Raabta

Although Rajkumar Rao’s role in the film would be described as 'a blink and a miss’ cameo, but he is a big highlight in the Dinesh Vijan movie. Rao played the role of an outlandish-looking 324-year-old man with strange piercings, wrinkly skin, and tribal tattoos. The prosthetics were so brilliant that most people could not recognize the actor as Rao in the teaser of the film. It marked the make-up artist’s victory, who successfully helped the audience completely immerse in the character and his appearance-almost compelling them to forget how the actor looks in real life.

Rishi Kapoor in Kapoor and Sons

Although this film seemed like a small-budget family drama, the production team spent Rs 2 Crore alone on Rishi Kapoor’s make-up. In the film, he played the role of a 99- year old grandfather, and to slay that look, popular artists who had earlier worked on films like ‘Titanic’ and ‘Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ were asked to offer the ideal look to Mr. Kapoor.

Vidya Balan in Bobby Jasoos

Unfortunately, Bobby Jasoos did not perform well at the box office. But it would be wrong to overlook the efforts made by the filmmakers to create the various looks of Vidya Balan in the film. The actress appeared as a beggar, a television producer, an astrologer, and many more. The use of prosthetic make-up was fabulous.

If you haven’t watched these films yet, it is time to give them a try!
