In the 2024 season, MotoGP will continue to feature the same number of riders and teams, i.e., 22 riders and 11 teams.
Dorna Sports, the official rights holder of MotoGP, has made it clear that they will not allow the addition of new teams in 2024. In short, Dorna has refused to expand the grid for the upcoming season.
For the record, the grid lost two teams last year after Suzuki left MotoGP, citing financial constraints. On the other hand, KTM is a manufacturer pushing hard to get six motorcycles on the grid.
However, Dorna's chief sporting officer, Carlos Ezpeleta, clarified that the number of teams and riders will likely remain unchanged in the 2024 season.
For the record, when Ducati struggled in the sport, Yamaha and Honda allowed concessions to Ducati, and because of this, the Italian outfit quickly became a formidable name. Other teams, such as Suzuki and KTM, also benefitted from concessions in the past.
Ezpeleta said, "We are working on helping, not only Honda, but also Yamaha, another Japanese manufacturer, so that they can become competitive again in a faster way."
"Honda and Yamaha were very considerate with the concessions regulation in the past, and that was vital for Ducati to be competitive and also for Suzuki to be competitive so quickly, and for KTM and Aprilia to enter the world championship officially and be competitive as well. The other manufacturers will also understand this. Dorna's official position is that the concessions system must be updated," he added.
