Agrasen Ki Baoli: A Must-Visit Heritage Site in the Heart of Delhi

Agrasen Ki Baoli is a centuries-old stepwell with stunning architecture.

In Delhi, if you’re done visiting all the usual attractions and want to explore the city more, then head towards the mystical as well as magnificent structure of Agrasen Ki Baoli.

Located on Hailey Road, it’s a 60-meter-long and 15-meter-wide stepwell with 108 steps, which served as a reservoir in ancient times. It consists of three levels, each of them having arched niches on both sides.

To be very precise, it’s the most popular among the few surviving historic ‘Baoli’s in India. Hidden amidst the bustling streets, the site remains relatively secluded, offering some unforgettable experiences to the visitors.

Also, it seems no less than a paradise for passionate photographers. As you go inside the structure, be sure to get transported to the bygone era altogether. Now, the entire site is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

History

Although there’s no recorded history, it’s commonly believed that Agrasen Ki Baoli was built by Maharaja Agrasen during the time of the Mahabharata. The idea was to conserve water, which would quench the thirst of the local people.

Later, in the 14th century, the structure was renovated by the rich Agarwal Community, who are believed to be the direct descendants of Maharaja Agrasen. In the ancient era, it also served as a community place where women used to gather and spend time in the summer.

Architecture

Without a single doubt, the red-bricked structure of Agrasen Ki Baoli is an architectural masterpiece, reflecting a bit of the Mughal style of architecture. The shape is slightly different from all the other historical stepwells located in the city of Delhi.

Each of the three levels serves as a landing where the visitors now sit and relax for some time. Also, there are dual arches, one is the facade arch, while the other one is the true arch. At the southwest corner of the complex, there is a small mosque standing on four sandstone pillars.

The structure has been captured multiple times in Bollywood cinema

The list includes some superhit films such as ‘PK’, ‘Sultan’, ‘Mom’, etc. Also, it appeared in the second episode of the Australian reality television game show ‘The Amazing Race Australia 2’.
