Khao Yai is inarguably the best of over 150 national parks scattered across Thailand. It is the 3rd largest national park in the country, spreading over a massive area of 2,168 square kilometers.
Founded in 1962, Khao Yai National Park has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It's packed with mountains, thick forests, lakes, streams, waterfalls, and a lot more.
Also, it's home to an impressive range of flora and fauna, making for an ideal place for wildlife enthusiasts.
Khao Yai National Park is located just at a distance of about 195 km from Bangkok. The most convenient way to reach the park is to take a cab from Bangkok, as this will take around 3 hours.
Also, there are frequent buses available from Bangkok for the same.
The best time to visit here is in winter. Due to the pleasant climate, it becomes easier for you to cover the entire park. Also, the road remains in good condition, making it more suitable for hiking and trekking.
However, some tourists prefer visiting here during monsoon to get a whole different experience.
Khao Yai National Park is world-renowned for many different things.
The main highlight here is undoubtedly the incredible variety of wildlife species. It's home to Asian black bears, wild elephants, clouded leopards, sun bears, pig-tailed macaques, king cobras, and more. Also, it has several different species of birds such as pelicans, banded kingfisher, etc.
The entire region houses several waterfalls, most of which look insanely gorgeous with their natural grandeur. Haew Narok is the most renowned here, which can be reached by a hike ona 600-meter trail. Haew Suwat is another sought-after here (featured in the critically acclaimed Hollywood film 'The Beach'). The list also includes Nam Tok Pa Kluai which is commonly called the Orchid Waterfall.
Khao Laem is the most popular peak in the entire area of Khao Yai National Park. It has a height of about 1,328 meters and can be climbed through a one-day hike. Another famous peak here is the Khao Khiau which has a height of 1350 meters. Both peaks offer a spectacular view of the surrounding areas. Also, they provide shelter to a wide range of bird species.
