World EV Day Spotlight: The Indian States Racing Ahead in EV Adoption and Charging Networks

Indian states are all gearing up in a zestful competition to lead in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, championing new technologies and encouraging zero-emission mobility. As the switch to electric vehicles gains traction, several Indian states are attempting to place themselves as the spearhead by enhancing EV adoption and developing supportive infrastructure. Today marks World EV Day, and in celebration let us have a look at the Indian states which are excelling in boosting EV adoption. We will also review the number of EVs sold in those states in 2024.

Current Status of EVs in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh is the only state in India that is leading in total EV registration with a total of over 2000,000 vehicles, which are primarily three-wheelers. The state’s growing population, buzzing with economic activity, and dynamic government policies are all playing a key role in significantly boosting EV adoption in the country. The Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy has been recently extended by the Uttar Pradesh government until 2027, further bolstering the state’s EV growth. Here are the types of EVs in UP:

  • Two-wheeler EVs- over 38,000 sold
  • Three-wheeler EVs- over 1.6 lakh sold
  • Four-wheeler EVs- over 2,800 sold

Maharashtra’s Efforts to Boost EV Adoption

The only strong competitor to Uttar Pradesh in terms of EC-friendly policies is Maharashtra, the state that has registered more than 1.26 lakh electric vehicles. The state’s dynamic and bold measures have expedited the early adoption of EVs. Furthermore, Maharashtra is placing itself as an EV manufacturing hub, appealing to leading companies like Mahindra Electric and Tata Motors. The breakdown of EV sales in Maharashtra includes:

  • Two-wheeler EVs: Over 1 lakh units sold
  • Three-wheeler EVs: Over 8,500 units sold
  • Four-wheeler EVs: Over 8,000 units sold

Karnataka’s EV Progress

Karnataka has positioned itself as the key runner in the race for the most EV-friendly state by selling over 99,000 electric vehicles in 2024. In a bid to establish the state as a hub for EV and battery manufacturing, and boost EV sales, certain measures have been listed in the Karnataka

Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy. Bengaluru, the capital of the state, which is known for its tech-nerdy population, has made an appearance as a major adopter of EVS. The types of EV sales in Karnataka are as follows:

  • Two-wheeler EVs- over 86,000 sold
  • Three-wheeler EVs- over 4,800 sold
  • Four-wheeler EVs- over 6,800 sold

Can Tamil Nadu Lead the EV Charge?

Tamil Nadu is emerging as a significant player in EV manufacturing. The state is fostering EV adoption with around 73,900 electric vehicles sold in 2024. The state features many leading automotive manufacturers and is making the most by encouraging EV usage and augmenting its manufacturing capabilities. The types of electric vehicles sold in Tamil Nadu are as follows:

  • Two-wheeler EVs: Over 64,000 units sold
  • Three-wheeler EVs: Over 4,200 units sold
  • Four-wheeler EVs: Over 4,600 units sold

Could Bihar Surprise as an EV Contender?

Similar to Uttar Pradesh a subsequent number of three-wheeler electric vehicles have been sold in Bihar,m with the state recording a sales of over 65,000 EVs in 2024. The types of EVs sold in Bihar are as follows:

  • Two-wheeler EVs: Over 10,900 units sold
  • Three-wheeler EVs: Over 54,000 units sold
  • Four-wheeler EVs: Over 500 units sold

Which State in India Has the Highest EV Penetration?

It's important to take into account both the total number of EVs and their fraction relative to the overall vehicle population when evaluating electric vehicle (EV) adoption. In this context, Goa emerges as the Indian state with the highest EV penetration, where EVs constitute 14% of all vehicle sales. It is followed closely by Tripura with a 13.73% share. On the other hand, Chandigarh holds a 13.50% penetration rate. Alongside these states, Assam and Delhi also have shown active adoption of EVs with rates at 9.93% and 10.72%, respectively.

Which State Boasts the Most EV Charging Stations?

When it comes to EV charging infrastructure and stations, then Maharashtra is clearly leading the race. It has around 3,079 charging stations spread across the state. In the second position comes Delhi with 1,886 charging stations. Delhi is followed by Karnataka which hosts 1,081 charging stations. These figures are based on government data available up to February 2024.
