Sabzi of the Day - Not Just Saag: Creative Ways to Relish Mustard Leaves This Winter

Winter isn’t complete without the tantalising aroma of sarson ka saag paired with makki ki roti. But did you know mustard leaves are more than just a seasonal treat?

These vibrant, peppery leaves are a staple in Indian kitchens, particularly in North and East India. It is in these parts of the country that the earthy flavours take centre stage in winter dishes. Mustard leaves offer endless possibilities to keep your taste buds and health in check.

Why Mustard Greens Are a Winter Superfood

Mustard leaves, or sarson, are a treasure trove of essential nutrients. They’re low in calories and fats, which makes them a perfect addition to your weight-loss regimen. But their benefits go far beyond being diet-friendly:

Rich in Antioxidants: Mustard leaves contain powerful compounds like flavonoids, lutein, beta-carotene, and vitamins A, C, E, and K. These help fight oxidative stress, boost immunity, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases like cancer.

Promotes Bone Health: Mustard greens help strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis thanks to a high vitamin K and calcium content.

Good for Eyesight: These greens keep your eyes healthy thanks to beta-carotene and vitamin A.

Digestive Health: Mustard is loaded with fibre, which supports digestion and regulates cholesterol levels.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Mustard greens help relieve muscle pain and reduce inflammation.

Immunity Booster: They are packed with micronutrients and phytochemicals and protect against winter illnesses like colds and flu.
